I have been searching to obtain additional information regarding both the ancestors of and the descendants of Valentine Tepfer (sometimes appearing as Tepher or TÖPFER) and Catherine Hoppe.I currently seem to have hit a wall regarding obtaining new information, so thought I'd post some of what information I do have in the hope that it might resonate with some of the threads that others are researching.
Based on the info I have, Valentine Tepfer (b.~1811-d.1887) married Catherine Hoppe (b.1810-d.1890) around 1834, presumably in Hesse (Germany). There are also references to Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. They immigrated in 1838 sailing from Bremen to Baltimore aboard the "Ernst and Gustav".They seemed to move around between Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and Keokuk, Lee, Iowa; with some branches also associated with Osage Mission (St. Paul) Kansas.
They had four children: John Henry Tepfer (b.1835-11-00, d.1906-04-05) Anna Catherine Tepfer (b.1839, d.>1885) Augustus J. Tepfer (b.1843, d.1893-12-27) Louisa Tepfer (b.1846-01-28, d.1918-11-09)
Valentine supposedly immigrated to meet up with other relatives who had already come across to America, but I've found no detailed references to who these might have been, when they migrated, or where they migrated to.
One of John Henry Tepfer's children was named George Washington Tepfer (b.1868-d.1886-05-30), but this appears to have been a different George Washington Tepfer from the one I've seen previously discussed on other boards. There do appear to be additional Tepfer lines in this area, particularly later in the Kansas area, but I don't know if these are descendents from branches that had previously immigrated to America or if the similar surnames was just coincidental.
I have a fair amount of information regarding John Henry's descendents and a little on the other children's.If you think you may have a link to this couple, I'd love to hear more about what you have.I would be especially interested if you can provide any additional information regarding their families in Europe.
