As I have said before on this genforum, a Tevis/Tivis/Teves y dna surname project would add much to the search for the origins of the Tevis surname.
For a y surname project the dna donors need to be males named Tevis.Project coordinators can be either gender and females have mitochondrial dna but that is not considered as effectivebecause that traces the mother's line wheras the y goes straight back though the father's line.
For example, my brother is a participant in the Donnachaidh y surname project and we were able to locate not only the birth family of our earliest proven Robertson ancestor, but also his grandfather. Thanks to another descendant, we have not only the dna but a paper trail as well.
Unlike Robertsons, the surname Tevis is said to descend from one person on this side of the pond.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. At many surname projects, there is a place where people can donate toward the dna testing of those who have tight budgets or the testing can be done in steps instead of all at once.
