Michael,
I'm researching and documenting the Thiel's in Australia.
Yes. The Thiel name is from Germany/Austria/Holland.
Different forms of the THIEL name are recorded in Europe way back to 947AD. There appears to be two sources of the name - one in Western Germany / Holland area and one from the Eastern German (now Polish) area.
Consolidation (authenticated multi-source documents) of the surname occurred between 1690-1750 in both areas.
There is documented evidence showing changes (for various reasons including errors and migration to foreign language countries)) to and from the surname of THIEL over the years. Other surnames in the same lineage include THIELE, THIELEN, TEIL, TILER, TYLER, DEITRICK, DEITERICH and similar. All of this makes tracing ones ancestors challenging.
Regards,
Rik Thiel
Great great grandson of Gottlieb and Helene THIEL (emigrated South Australia 1866)
