Hi Richard ! Please see my response to Gary. I'd be interested in the Thistles traced by Mr Russell. All in Canada ? Many sources suggest the Thistle is of Norse origin. Webster says the word is Norse, Knut Thistle was from Norway( see Geneology corresp.). Ketel Thistle(?sp)settled Thistlefyord(?) on the NE coast of Iceland @ 1100( Norse sagas ).( Norwegan Viking ). Most Thistles seem to be in the NE part of England, esp. around Whitby. This was heavily settled by the Dano-Norwegan vikings as reflected in many of the names and places.Channel Islands also.York,Northumberland ( Jorvik ? ) was a big Viking trading center now with a large archeologic display, Nat. Geogr. writeup, etc. Likely the Scottish Thistles also arrived from Norway just across the North Sea.JOHN
