I am the great-great-granddaughter of Sir Robert Thorburn, Prime Minister of Newfoundland 1885-1890.I am interested in identifying his ancestors, but have been unable to trace back any further than his parents, Robert Thorburn and Alison Grieve. Can anyone help?
This is what I know about Sir Robert Thorburn and his descendants:Robert was born to Robert Thorburn and Alison Grieve in March 1836 in Juniper (or Jupiter?) Bank, Peebleshire, Scotland. He travelled to Newfoundland to work with his uncles Walter R. Grieve and James J. Grieve at Baine, Johnston and Company around 1852.He became a partner in his uncle's business - Walter Grieve & Co. - around 1862.He became Prime Minister of Newfoundland in 1885, and eventually formed fish exporting partnership Thorburn & Tessier around 1887.He was knighted in 1887.
Robert Thorburn married Susanna Milroy and they had at least 3 children:Alison, Robert, and William.
His daughter Alison married William J. Graham, who was a Presbyterian Minister. They ended up in Jamaica and had 7 children:Robert (b. Oct 1893), Janetta (b. May 1895), William (b. Nov 1887), Melville (b. Oct 1899), Guy (b. Nov 1900), and twins Ian & Cyril (b. Mar 1904).
Their son Melville (my grandfather) married Beryl Facey in La Ceiba, Honduras in Oct 1927 and they had 4 children:Ruth (b. Apr 1929 in Honduras), William (b. Dec 1930 in Jamaica), Marjorie (b. May 1933 in Jamaica), and Robert (b. Oct 1941 in Honduras).Their daughter Ruth is my mother.
Any information, or suggestions, regarding the ancestors of Sir Robert Thorburn would be appreciated.
