NOTE:Richard Mundy's pedigree shows Richard was the son of John Thornton born 1472 in Cheshire and Dorothy Chelsam, daughter of George Aynesworth Chelsam of Chelsam in county Surrey.According to Mundy, he lived at Genford in Middlesex and was servant to the Lady Margaret, Countess of Richmond and Darby, mother of King Henry VII.
Robert Thornton has been unable to find any reference concerning this John Thornton in his research for credible contemporaneous sources. - DE

I, Thomas Thornton of parish Greenford in the county of Middlesex, yeoman, sick and weak of body but yet of perfect memory, praise be therefore given to God do constitute, ordain and make this my testament containing herein my Last Will the ___ day of February in the year of our Lord 1572 concerning all my lands firmament and hereditament goods _______ and other movables _____ now in the realm of England in the manner and forms following, that is to say:
First, I remand my soul unto hands and protection of Almighty God, my alone savior and redeemer, by the reading of noble presents beyond.
I trust to be _______ and my body to be buried according to the discretion of my executors.
Item -1 give and bequeath unto the poor of the parish of Greenford 6 pounds.
Item -1 give to Elizabeth Thornton, my daughter, forty pounds.
Item -1 give unto Catherine, my daughter, forty pounds.

Item -1 bequeath unto Dorothy, my daughter, forty pounds to be paid at the day of her marriage or at 22 years of age.
If any of my daughters die before they are married or before the age of 22 years, then the portion(s) of them that do die shall be divided among those that remain alive.

A series of lawsuits beginning 19 May 1701 and ending 16 July 1704 apparently resulted in ousting Luke from the land on the ground that his title was not good.

IN THE NAME GOD AMEN, I Luke Thornton of North Farnham Pah, in Richmond County, being weak in body but of sound and perfect memory thanks be to God for ye same do make this my last will and Testament in manner and form following--
First, I bequeath my soul to Almight God yt gave it hopeing through ye merits of my Saviour Jesus Christ to obtain everlasting life and as for my body I commit to ye earth to be decently buried at ye discretion of my Executors hereafter named. Imprimis -1 will yet ? my just debts and funeral charges be paid out of my Estate.
Item: I give to my son Thomas Thornton the land belong to me in Westmoreland County from a branch beyond Pantico as goes to Mr. Sorrells land where John Holloday now lives & to his heirs forever.
Item: I give to my grandson William Thornton a piece of land bounded as followeth - from ye fence where his mother now lives down to pottage pott and a water course to their Spring thence to a line wch divides his & my grand daughter Sarah Jones all ye Best of my land during their natural lives & to ye longest liver of them & after their decease ye land where Richard Evans now lives I give my grandson Mark Thornton is to goe up to a branch beyond pantico joining to ye land given to my son Thos. Thornton.
Item: I give to my son Matthew Thornton four head of cattle ye youngest to be three years old & oldest not to be over ten also twenty shillings to bye him a ring.
Item: I give to my daugher Eliza Nash twenty shilling to bye her a ring. Whereas I have sold unto my son Thos. Thornton one negro woman named Dide for two Thousand pounds of Tobo one thousand to be paid this present year, and one thousand next year wch Tobo I give unto my daughter Ann Mountjoy and my Granddaughter Sarah Jones.
Item: I give unto my daugher Ann Mountjoy and to my granddaughter Sara Jones my negr man named Tony during their natural lives & after their decease to go to my grandson Rowland Thornton & his heirs forever. As for ye rest reidue & remainder of my Estate I give unto my sd Daughter Ann Mountjoy & to my Grand daughter Sarah Jones & their heirs whom I also make constitute and appoint my whole & sole Executors of this my last will & Testament.
