Hi Jim
I do know the story about Susan and why her parents are not often listed.I had Davis parents as James and Judith Crediford Thurlow but also possible a Mary ??? as wife of James.I Forgot where I got that Mary part.Perhaps on ancestry. or perhaps they confused one of Davis' daughters in there somehow.When Davis and Abigail (Manchester) Thurlow joined the Shakersthey had had most of their children.(Susanna, Mary, Anna, Solomon, Isaac and Abraham.The girl Susanna died young.There was a Native Malaceet woman who worked in Davis and Abigails home as a maid.Of course by then, it was seperated sexes in the community.Davis had relations with the Native womas and Susan is the result of that union.The native woman left her in Davis and Abigails care as she would be getting a better life than if she went to the native villages.When Susan was grown up, she went with another Native boy who had been in the home of Davis' brother.He went by the name Richard Thurlow. Susan's Native name is"Little Cloud That Rains" and Richards was "He Who Hunts Alone"They did not have a marriage in the traditional sense but more like the Native ways.They both did frequent the Native villagesIt was becaue of Susan that Davis and Abigail were eventually asked to leave the Shaker comunity.They moved to Raymond Maine area.There are quite a few years between the birth of Hiram and David Sewell Nelson Thurlow.I have David'd Civil War pension record.
I do not have a lot of information about the brothers of Davis Thurlow.It is good to find another descendant who is working on the Thurlow lines.I wish you good fortune in your searches.
Sincerely;
Jo Ann Hatstat
