Have you discovered anything about John's family? I've been researching a Felix Tierney who has a good land record from 1828-1876 'near Newtonhamilton' in Armagh. His daughter Margaret married Patrick McAlinden and I assumed up until this week that they were married in Ireland.
Charlotte Goodburn who was researching their youngest surviving child: Mary who married George Gray from Omskirk in Yorkshire, sent away for the marriage certificate showing Patrick and Margaret were married in Yorkshire in 1854. I can't find any word of them separtely in the 1851 census but the census finder didn't have a soundex function,...Pat and Margaret moved to Scotland by 1855-6 when their eldest child Bernard was born. By 1861 they are in Gainsborough Lincolnshire and soon moved back to Yorkshire. Their forth child,Patrick was my grandmother Emily McAlinden's father born in 1861.
Charlotte's father's g grandmother was Mary Tierney, the daughter of John Tierney b1818 and Rose (maiden name unknown). Charlotte is trying to make the connection between Margaret (Tierney)McAlinden's family and her gg grandmother Mary but the Armagh location for my Felix Tierney (and yours) doesn't fit with Charlotte's John Tierney being from Cork or Cavan. Charlottes father knew Mary (Tierney) and George Gray and knew their was a Tierney connection for both of them. One can assume Margaret was related to the Goodburn's Tierney...
If you know if your John Tierney had a brother Felix who he named his son after it would help establish if my Felix is from Armagh. He is the only Felix of that generation (born early 1800's) I can find in the Irish records. I think I've found him having moved to the States in his final years to be with his daughter who married a Ziegenfuss and who can be trailed to Wisconsin and then Napa Valley California by 1880; Felix is living with her at that time and there are Ziegenfusses in Wisconsin (probably cousins/uncle to Felix's daughter's husband) and also another Felix Tierney who was listed in the insane asylum in Wisconsin not far from the Ziegenfusses who stayed there.(can't recall the name of Felix's daughter who married the Ziegenfuss... Catherine?) The Felix in Wisconsin, this other daughter of Felix Sr. and Margaret were all born in the 1830 time period. This time period fits assuming they are children of Felix sr. who was 78 in 1880.
Do you know anything about the siblings of your John Tierney b 1818. Is Felix Tierney of Newtonhamilton his brother?
I'll check the Valuation records to see if there is a John Tierney nearby... Sincerely,
