I am a descendant of Ray G Tift, through his son, Ray Wilkins Tifft. Ray W met his wife, Julia Amelia Waterman outside of Salt Lake City. They were married in 1855 in SLC. There is evidence that Julia Amelia had converted to the LDS church at Nauvoo, confirmed by Brigham Young and one of his brothers. The couple eventually settled in Smartsville, Yuba County, California, where Ray Wilkins Tifft became a physician sometime after 1870. Julia Amelia did not profess or practice Mormonism after the death of her baby outside Winnemucca while the couple travelled west by wagon train.
Julia Amelia spent her final years shuttling between the homes of her daughter Mary Tifft Hill in Roseville, Placer County, California; and her granddaughter Rose Harris in Berkeley, Alameda County, California. In 1910 Julia appears on the Census twice, once for each home.
