I forgot I had a folder on the Tilghman surname with numerous notes in it.Thought perhaps some of the notes may help you with your Caroline Tolbert.
Randomly they are: 1850 Census of Randolph Grove, McLean County, Illinois 24 Oct 1850
page 76#13-42 William Tolbert age 22 male farmer 2000 born in Indiana Caroline"age 23 female born in Virginia Milton"age 2male born in Indiana Newton J. 9/12 (9 months) male born in Indiana
1860 census of Randolph Twp., McLean Co., Illinois 703-702 Caroline Talbor age 34 female 3000/1000 born in Virginia Milton"age 11 male born in Indiana Newton J"age 10 male born in Indiana Henry"age 9 male born in Indiana Mathew E. Bale/Ball(?) age 10 male born in Indiana Robert""age 23farmer born in Indiana
I see by my notes that I have James H. Tilghman marrying a Harriet Rutledge in 1858.I will have to see where I got that.
I gave you earlier Caroline Tilghman living in McLean County, Illinois in the 1870 census, but she is also listed with James Tilghman in the same 1870 census in Champaign County, Illinois.Apparently, the census taker spelled his name as J. H. Tillman--the census goes as follows: 1870 census of Champaign County, Illinois Compromise Twp. P. O. is Rantoul29 July 1870 page 6 #42-42 Tillman, J. H.34 male whilte farmer 2400/600 born in Michigan Tillman, Carolin34 female white keeping house born in Virginia Tillman, Lewis C. age 11 male white born in Illinois Tillman, Lester B. age 9 male white born in Illinois Tillman, Arther Lee age 5 male white born in Illinois Tillman, Charles S.? age 3 male white born in Illinois (I put down spelling of names as I found on the census. I also had in my notes that Lewis C. and Lester B. Tillman (Tilghman) were probably the sons of his first wife Harriet.
I also had in my notes the Frank Tilghman I had been looking for in the 1880 census.I could not find him, but apparently years ago I did as here he is: Downs Twp., McLean County, Illinois page 1 #9-9 Tilghman, Franklin white male age 27 farmer born in Michigan, father in New York mother in New York Tilghman, Elma white female age 27 born in West Virginia father in West Virginiamother in West Virginia.
Beings Franklin and James Tilghman are both from Michigan and married in McLean/Champaign/Vermilion Counties of Illinois, I think they are probably brothers.
Also found the Charles Tilghman in the 1880 census notes that I did years ago.Don't quite understand why I did not find him in the current 1880 census index. If you are interested in the info I will send it, but I know you are probably just interested in the Tolbert line.Looks like this Charles Tilghman was from Michigan also. But says his parents were born in Pennsylvania.
I did a time line some time ago on the Rutledge, Tolbert, Tilghman and Pitts line to see how they look
I have that Harriet Rutledge first wife of James H. Tilghman was born in 1836 and died 1861-1863. She may have had Lewis born about 1859 and Lester born about 1861
That Caroline Tolbert--I have her maiden name as McDaniel--or at least her name before marrying William Tolbert. She must have been born abour 1826 and died after 1887. she had Arthur born about 1865 and Charles born about 1867/68.
I have Nacny E. Pitts born about 1850 and no death date, but in my notes I have that she went to Ponoka, Alberta, Canada where I know that two of her sisters and their families went.I know nothing more about her.
Nancy E. (Pitts) Tilghman says in the 1880 census that she is a widow.
A biographical sketch of McLean County, Illinois "Portrait and Biographical Album of McLean County, Illinois published in 1887 says that "her (Caroline" husband James Tilghman was deceased".But she shows on the 1880 census that they are divorced.
I have information that a James Henry Tilghman born 2 May 1833 in Oakland County, Michigan may be the son of James Matthews Tilghman and Barbara Ann Chapman.Their other children were Charles Martin Tilghman, William Henry Harrison Tilghman, Vernelia Grace Tilghman and Frank Covington Tilghman. Sounds like this might be the same James H. (Henry) Tilghman that married your Caroline Tolbert (McDaniel?) and my Nancy Elizabeth Pitts.
That is all the notes I have -----I think!!!!!!!!!!!!!
