Murder of Temple Tillis (b. c1825, GA)
Do any of you Temple Tillis researchers have any more info on his murder?
From Death, Marriage and Probate Notices from Montgomery, Alabama Newspapers, Volume 2, 1866-1875, compiled by Larry E. Caver, Jr., page 120:
February 14, 1872: A Proclamation By the Governor of Alabama
Whereas, authentic information has reached this Department, that on the 20th day of January, A.D., 1872, one Temple Tillis was murdered in the town of Elba, Coffee County, Alabama, and that one Nedham Taunton is charged with committing said murder and has fled from justice. Now, therefore, I, Robert B. Lindsay, by virtue of the power and authority in me vested as Governor of the State of Alabama, doe issue this my proclamation, offering a reward of three hundred dollars for the apprehension of, and delivery of said Nedham Taunton into the custody of the Sheriff of Coffee County... Given under my hand, and the Great Seal of the State at the Capitol in Montgomery this 12th day of February... Robert B. Lindsay.
Does anyone know who this "Nedham" Taunton was? I've mapped out the entire Taunton family of Coffee Co., and there's not a Nedham to be found anywhere other than this record -- several Newsom Tauntons, though, and a Newton Taunton, so I'm wondering if the first name in the above record is an error? I have several records of Newsom Taunton borrowing money from Temple Tillis, so I'm wondering if this murder was the result of an argument over money.
Does anyone know if there were any newspapers that might have carried the story that I could search?
If anyone has any more info on Temple Tillis' murder, please email me directly at [email protected]. Thanks!
