I’m trying to establish if there is a connection between the Timlin, Hill & Preach families of Armstrong, Westmoreland & Allegheny counties (PA) by answering the following questions:
1. Was Caroline Hill Timlin the daughter of Eliza Hill and Fred Preach?
2. Was Hill the maiden name of the Eliza who was married to Fred Preach
3. What was the original German surname for Preach?
4. Was this Eliza Hill the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth/Elisabeth Hill of Armstrong County?
5. Was “M” the middle initial for Eliza, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth?
I’m hoping someone researching any of these families (or allied families that have married into these) can help me with these answers. Here is the trail that leads me to these questions/possibilities.Please help me confirm or deny this data. Please email me directly at email@example.com.
Thanks for any assistance.
TIMLIN to PREACH connection
1920 Census records for Allegheny County (19th Ward), PA show:
Frank Timlin, age 52 head (birth year 1868 – PA, with father born in Ireland, mother born in England)
Caroline Timlin, age 50, wife (birth year1870 – in PA, but shows both parents born in PA which could be an error if Fred Preach was her father; also birth year is inconsistent with data from obituary that shows her birth year to be 1868 and her name Caroline Hill Timlin. Was Hill her middle name and Preach her maiden name?If so, was Hill her mother’s maiden name and passed to Caroline as a middle name?)
George Timlin, age 15, son (birth year 1905)
Vernon Timlin, age 13, son (birth year 1907)
Valentine Timlin, age 8, son (birth year 1912)
Margaret Timlin, age 6, daughter (birth year 1914)
William Weinheimer, age 1 ½, grandson (birth year 1918/19)
Fred Preach, age 72, Father-in-law (birth year 1848 – in Germany with both parents born in Germany),
1910 Census records for Allegheny County (13th Ward) show:
Fred Preach, age 61 born in Germany, both parents born in Germany (birth year would be 1849)
Eliza M, wife, age 61, born in PA, both parents born in PA (birth year would be 1849); it further shows she was the mother of 9 children and 9 were missing from that household census.(Only one child, Frederick can be accounted for in Allegheny County 1910.)
1900 Census records for Allegheny County (14th Ward), PA show:
Frederick Preach, head, age 52, born Oct. 1848 in Germany with both parents born in Germany; shows he had been in the US for 33 years, thus 1867, age 19.
Wife…name appears as A______O, age 52, born Oct. 1848, shows her as the mother of 9 with 6 missing from the census; shows her born in PA with father born in Germany & mother born in PA(Her age and number of children is consistent with 1910 data, place of birth for her father is not.)
John, son, age 24, b. Oct. 1876 (occupation Conductor)
George (?), son, age 21, b. Feb. 1879 (occupation Music Teacher)
Edward, son, age 19, b. Aug. 1881
I cannot find census records for 1880 or 1870 for this family.ALTHOUGHFred Preach shows up in OH in 1870.His age is 22 that fits the age profile; his place of birth was Holland and language German – thus that could have been misinformation. But Caroline was born in Allegheny County in 1868/70 – so I don’t believe this is the same Fred Preach.
ALSO, could his name have been changed to Preach? And what would some German variations be?
PREACH to HILL connection
On the possibility that Caroline Hill Timlin’s mother’s maiden name was Hill, we begin a search for Eliza Hill, born in PA about 1848.
The closest match is Eliza Hill, born in 1849 in Armstrong County. Her parents were Abraham Hill & Elizabeth.
As I am unable to find an Eliza Hill with these age parameters in a household for the 1870 census (she would have been 21), I’m wondering if this is the Eliza who married Fred Preach?
