James Tims was born on December 17, 1921, on a farm near Hadley, Minnesota to John and Adriana Los Tims. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. James was drafted on March 9, 1945, and served in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge on November 22, 1946, James returned to the Hadley area. On September 15, 1950, he and Florence Behrends were married in Worthington, Minnesota.Following their marriage they farmed with his brother Arthur for 35 years near Hadley and raised their four children.In 1987, they retired from farming and moved to Slayton, Minnesota.James then helped John Van Dyke on his farm for many years. In addition, he served the community through Volunteer Meal Service and helping at the Food Shelf. James enjoyed gardening and also tirelessly served the sick and elderly during his retirement years. James passed away on January 22, 2008, at the Sanford Luverne Hospital in Luverne, Minnesota at the age of 86. He was a former member of the Assembly of God Church in Slayton and was an adult Sunday school teacher for many years.
Survivors include his loving wife Florence Tims, Edina, MN; three children and their spouses: Dan and Joanne Tims, Tega Cay, SC; David and Jeanine Tims, Sioux Falls, SD; and Julie and Tom Brown, Richfield, MN; 10 grandchildren; four brothers: Henry Tims and his wife Ruth. Slayton, MN; Arthur Tims, Slayton, MN; Benjamin Tims and his wife Frances, Cottage Grove, MN; and William Tims and his wife Dale Anne, Tulsa, OK; three sisters: Jennie Oliver, Denver, CO; Gertrude Holman and her husband Arnold, Mountain Lake, MN; and Alice Grimmius, Mt. Vernon, WA.He was preceded in death by beloved son Joel, at age 16; his parents; four brothers: John, Tony, Cory and Buster Tims; and two sisters: Johanna Lolkus and Jane Paulson.
Funeral services were held at First Reformed Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. James Allen officiating. The organist was Viola Hoekman with special music by Julie Brown and Benjamin and Frances Tims. The pallbearers were Matthew Tims, Ryan Tims, Joshua Tims, Paul Tims, Steven Tims, Travis Brown and Randy Tims. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN. Military honors accord by the Slayton V.F.W. Post and the American Legion.
