John,
We have covered this in private emails, but I think it deserves the wider coverage of this forum. The proof that Lemuel Tinnin (1804 TN – 1842 AR), who was buried in Maysville, Benton Co. AR, was son of John Tinnin, Sr. (abt 1769 NC - 1834 MS)and Elizabeth Moore is found, indirectly, in my Post-em to Will Johnson’s WorldConnect site for Lemuel, referenced above.Lemuel “Tinnen” and John A.P. Carr were jointly issued a Land Patent for 160 acres in Benton Co. AR.John A.P. Carr (1800 TN – 1867 TX) married John & Elizabeth (Moore) Tinnin’s daughter Jane Tinnin (1812 TN - 1900 TX).Jane is known to be a daughter of John Sr. & Elizabeth Moore, from family letters contained in “Tinnin Treks” (pp. 26 ff.).Lemuel Tinnin and John Carr must have been brothers-in-law.The 1840 Census of Benton Co. AR shows J P Carr and L Tinan on adjacent lines.Benton Co. was created in 1836 from Washington Co.
Lemuel’s father John Tinnin married Elizabeth Moore 22 Jul 1796 in Sumner Co. TN, and that’s apparently where all their eight children were born, the youngest being John Jr., b. about 1814.Land records indicate that after John left Sumner Co. he went to Franklin Co. AL, in 1820 or thereabouts (he wasn’t listed on the 1820 Territorial Census). He joined his brother-in-law Andrew Allen (m. Sarah Tinnin), who had gone there earlier. In the late 1820s, John Tinnin and family moved to Hinds Co. MS, where he and son Hugh were household heads in the 1830 Census, and where John died in 1834.However, Lemuel, by then a young man, went with his uncle Andrew Allen to Arkansas.Andrew’s sons Abram and William Allen and his nephew Lemuel Tinnin settled in Washington Co. AR, where Lemuel married Mary Wood on 6 Jul 1830.By 1839, Lemuel’s brother Hugh had also moved to Washington Co. AR.
The proof for Lemuel being father of your James Tinnin and other sons is to be found in his widow Mary’s 1850 and 1860 Census records in Benton County, AR.After Lemuel’s death, Mary married W.A. Alexander, and her Tinnin sons were listed with the Alexander surname, so they are hard to spot.In a separate Post-em to the above site, I show that Lemuel Tinnin and wife Mary Wood had a fourth son, in addition to Thomas (1833-1852), Capt. Hugh L (1835-1883) and James Preston Tinnin (1842-1909):William Tinnin b. abt. 1838 in Benton Co. AR, and died after 1860.William Tinnin’s CSA records show him with the middle initial H and M, a Private in Company E, 1st Regiment, Arkansas Mounted Rifles.I have found no records for him after the War.
