Martha Tomb, tax collector, Ind. cty, Pa., 1929
St. Charles (Kane County, Illinois) Chronicle, Nov. 29, 1928. Tax Collector Idle in Pennsylvania Village. Armagh, Pa.--This little village of some 110 inhabitants is a tax collector's paradise -- little or no work, but the salary goes on.
In a recent survey conducted by the Department of Internal Affairs it was disclosed that no taxes were collected or needed here in 1927
According to tax collector Martha E. Tomb, a 5-mill tax was collected in 1926 on property assessed at $81,084, netting $394.13.
This was not only sufficient for the needs of the village in that year but created a surplus large enough to make taxes needless in 1927. (Posted as a courtesy, not related. Wouldn't this be amazing today?)
