The first George Tomes came to Detroit from England. He was wealthy and had something to do with the Central Michigan Railroad. I have not found any connection between the Tomes name and that railroad, yet.
One of his children, the second George, was disowned from the family because he married the Irish maid.
One of his children, the third George, was popular in Detroit's Vaudville venue. He is said to have been a very good singer, but he was also an alcoholic who died at the age of 39. He was married to Gertrude Haack, also of Detroit. Her family originated in Germany. They had 15 children. Three sets of twins.
