Tommy, Florida
I am researching my husband's family.I have also requested a page for this spelling of Tommy. As I go through this page I don't see a connection but one never knows....so I'll try.
Florida Tommy was reported to be in the Judicial system in Cook Cty. Illinois in the 1930's, not sure of dates. Her son, my husbands Grandfather, was Chief Willie Bowlegs who upon reading his SS. information was born in the Everglades Jan. 31,1896.The Death Index however read Jan. 1st of 1894 as I recall.
He died Dec. 5,1964 and is buried in Worth Illinois according to his death certificate. He said on his SS. info. he was Indian and Spanish. We knew of him as being Seminole and so suspect Florida Tommy his Mother was.Willie's father was listed as Willie Cornelius. His SS card was issued in Kansas in 1937.
He is reported to be a colorful character and was known by names such as Cuban Jack and Alligator Willie or some such because of wrestling Alligators in the Everglades I suspect.
He was with the Circus and one of these was the "Seal Brothers Circus". At one time he traveled the country sellinga snake oil with his picture on the bottle we were told.
Among the Seminole I see two different ways of spelling Tommy.I am taking the chance it was this way but could have been any of the seven different ones I suppose. Tomey, Tomme, Tomie, Tommey, Tomme, Thome, Tome, Ptomey. So far this is my first board in an effort to locate more info. If I'm given a board for Tommy it may open up a whole new line. We have begun a search in Illinois and the Everglades.
