Rosemary,
Here is a little more info on your line:
Upon his death bed about "foure howers before his departure out of this mortall life,"William Tooke made his nuncupative will as follows:
"I give and bequeath unto Jane Tooke, my wife, my whole estate, goods _________, nominate her my whole exor, paying unto Jno and Rebecka Took, my sonne and daughter one mare foale proved by the oaths of Joseph Vinson and Mary Williams in court and upon record in folio 98 of this booke.Vera recorded Feby 8, 1675
Joan/Jane Tooke was the step-daughte of William Ridley of Isle of Wight Co., VA.(A copy of his will is included in the book). She had four children at the time her step-father devised his will in 1671.When her husband died in 1675, he bequeathed his property to his wife Jane, and his son and daughter.
Joan Took was a Quaker and her second husband, John Barnes of Surry Co., was also a Quaker. His will was written March 2, 1690, and was probated June 1, 1691 in Surry Co.The third husband of Joan was Thomas Bowman. He died about 1695.His legatees were his "son" John Tooke;wife Jane, and his daughters Sarah and Susannah Barnes. He died about 1695.Her will in Surry Co., written "5th day of the 8 month, commonly called October in the year of our Lord, 1702."Her mark was:B.(Will in book)
Joan's signature was sealed with a signet ring, indicating that she was a person of quality, and the signature was:"Mark" Joano B Bowman
Elizabeth Tooke (William (2), James (1)) daughter of William and Joan Tooke, was born in Surry Co., VA about 1660-7.Very little is known about her.In those days it was usual for women to lose their identity when they married and no effort was made to record their maiden names in the Deeds of Gifts, deeds of land sale, or other records. When a father left furniture or livestock to his daughter he named his daughter as a legatee but omitted her maiden name.In the case of Elizabeth's father he did not mention her in his nuncupative will nor her sister Jane Tooke Newby. They were both probably married when he died.
Elizabeth was living when her mother executed her will in 1702, but by the year 1714 she had prob ably predeceased her husband, Michael Ezell, as she was not mentioned in his will.
Skipping to Part III - Chapter 3 Timothy Ezell, the Immigrant
The Ezell Family is probably of French descent, although the immigrant to VA came from England. In the early VA records, and to this date, the name Ezell is spelled in various ways:Esel, Essell, Esselle, Ezal, Easwell, Ezzall, Ezall, Ezel, Ezell, Ezelle, Ezzel, Ezzell, Ezzelle, Isal, Isel, Iseld, Isold, Isriell, Isrielle, Issell, Isrioll, Issul, Izard, Oisel, Usel, Usselle, Uzzell, Uzzelle, Uzziel, Sills and Gills.
Timothy, the immigrant, was born in England and died 1688-96 in Surry Co., VA.His wife was probably Mary.Timothy Issell gave John Orchard power of attorney to sell 211 acres of land in surry Co., on 2.26.1652.
The record shows that Timothy had been in VA some time prior to 1652, because of the time required to process patents. He was therefore, over 21, having been born prior to 1630. Timothy may have become discouraged and returned to England around 1652-4, only to return again. He was one of 11 persons transported with Captain William Canfill (Caufell) on Jan. 24, 1656, along with Joane Gurney, Joane Davis and others.Timothy gave bond to John Holmwood on March 5, 1652.
Timothy "Easwell" was a tithable in Surry Co., VA in 1668, Timothy "Essell" of Lawns Creek Parish in 1674, Tim. "Essell" in 1678, Tim. "Essell" Sr., in 1683 , Lawns Creek, and Timothy "Ezell" Sr., in 1688.He died between 1688 and 1686, when Mary Essell, probably the widow of Timothy, appeared in court on 7.7.1696 and made oath that the inventory of his estate was true and perfect.(Listed in book).
Mary "Ezard" on 10.9.1696 made application for letters of administration on the estate of Timothy "Ezard", late of this colony, deceased.....which was granted.
Timothy and Mary had two known sons, Timothy Jr., and Michael - there may have been more but it is unk at this time.
Rosemary, Please keep in mind - everything I'm quoting is from the book - I have done NO research myself into this family. The book is fairly well researched and most everything is backed up with a reference to the origin. This is a rather large book so there is plenty more info.Take care and God Bless.....Shannon
