William Tooley's daughter, Hannah, married my 2nd great-granduncle, Allen Wakfield DeWitt. He was born abt. 1820 in Russelville, Monroe, Kentucky, and died May 31, 1893 in Tulare County, California. Hannah died in Tulare County in 1896.
Allen Wakefield DeWitt was a preacher and evangelist in the gold camps in California. The family moved from Kentucky to Illinois and joined the gold rush to California in 1859, crossing the west by covered wagon.
Allen & Hannah's first child, William Marcus DeWitt, was born May 17, 1839, in Monroe County, Kentucky. William was a prominent lawyer in Tulare County. His biography appears in the 1913 History of Tulare and Kings Counties, California. He married Agnes McDonald of Vermont in January 1872 in Santa Cruz, California. They had 9 children: Florence, Alice W., William H., Walter, John, Edward, Edna, Irma M., & Earl McDonald. William Marcus died December 28, 1925, in Tulare, California.
Allen & Hannah's second child, Lydia Angelina, was born May 19, 1842, in Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky. She married James Brown Zumwalt on March 07, 1860. They had 11 children: Marcus Cicero, Allen Lafayette, John Randall, Fannie Bell, James Eleazer, Florence Hannah, Mabel Edith, Minnie Myrtle, Alma Nettie, & Clyde DeWitt. James Eleazer was the grandfather of Vietnam War era Admiral Elmo Russell Zumwalt, Jr.
Allen & Hannah's third child, Elezazer, was born February 25, 1844, in Simpson County, Kentucky. He married Margaret Maggie Ford abt. 1871. They had 6 children: Marcus Elmo, Hattie Gertrude, Rubie Clare, Henry Clay, Elna Maude, & Patti Camille. Eleazer died September 21, 1931, in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California.
Allen & Hannah's 4th child, Samuel Henry, was born January 28, 1853, in Fayette County, Kentucky. He married Jenettie Ore Robertson March 26, 1873, in Princeton, Colusa County, California. They had 5 children: Raymond Pierce, Laura Edith, Allen Wirt, George Henry, & Fannie Etta. Samuel Henry died February 12, 1934, in Alhambra, California.
Allen & Hannah's 5th child, Rebecca, was born abt. 1862, in Red Bluff, California and died in Red Bluff abt. 1863.
