Raymond Carroll Toothman, born 12/30/1916 at Rivesville (the birth record says; children in this family are variously born at Rivesville, Baxter, Meredith Springs), son of Fred C Toothman and Mintie Moore.
Fred Camlin Toothman, "retired carpenter," born 1/20/1878, died 11/3/1964 in Marion Co, son of James K Toothman and Nancy Camlin. His widow, Mintie Moore, born 8/17/1881, died 12/1/1968 in Marion Co, daughter of Simon Moore and Angelina Michael (her parents' names are slightly different on their marriage record, which is in Monongalia Co, where they married 3/16/1899).
Raymond is 6th generation from Christman Duchmann (1719-1802) and Anna Maria Husser (1722-bef 1796). The steps are Christman1 Christian2 John3 James K4 Fred C5 Raymond C6. If there's any mystery about this family it probably comes strictly from the tendency among Toothmans to disclaim relationship to anyone not born in the same room of the house. James K (1847-1938) seems a little young to have been in the Civil War though it's possible he might have run off and joined the confederate army. There used to be more Toothmans than Smiths in Marion Co, and most of them do not claim to be related to anyone who was not born in the same room of the house. However, as far as I can see, everyone named Toothman is a descendant of Christman Duchmann and Anna Maria Husser, who came from Alsace in 1749.
