Article Date:October 15 1898
Article Description:Tax Agent on the Trail of a Dodger From Missouri.
Article Text:
Colorado Springs, Oct. 15.--Charles P. FANT, who has been retained by the county
commissioners to collect delinquent and unassessed taxes, has gone after John J.
TOOTLE, a young nabob of St. Joseph, Mo., who is charged with an attempt to evade
taxation.Young TOOTLE was left a fortune by his father, who was one of the big dry goods
merchants of St. Joe. He alternates between St. Joe and Manitou, and, being sporty by
nature, he maintains horses and carriages in both places.
It is charged that TOOTLE appeared before the assessing board in St. Joe the other
day and swore that he was not a resident of that place, but that his home was in
Manitou. He had been assessed at $340,000.The amount involved is large and the agent
of the commissioners evidently believes that it is worth going after. He intends to
examine the county records in St. Joe and the will of the late merchant and see just
how the matter stands.
