I wasn't clear about the lineage in my previous e-mail, so let me back up and try again.
Lydia Eunice Torrance, d/o Jeduthan Torrance (II) and Emma Bartlett, was b. in Ore. Nov. 27, 1860, and m. (1) Thomas Gilman Stevenson, ca. 1878/79,( b. ca. 1844-46 in Maine to unknown father b. Maine and Alvira/Elvira ? b. Mass.)To this marriage (Lydia and Thomas) were b. Meda (aka Mindea/Meadea/Mettie) E. b. Dec. 20, 1879; Henry (S.?) b. June 1881; Emma Vera b. March 1882; Alice M. b. May 1891.There is purportedly another dau., Zella, whom I have been unable to locate in a record, but Lydia says in the 1900 census that 5 children were b. to her and 5 are living. In about 1915, Charles Frederick Torrance gave information to Cyrus Brown for the Brown Genealogy in which he stated that there were 5 children b. to Lydia, 3 living (there is a Portland death record for Alice M. Stevenson on July 3, 1902).On March 27, 1894, Lydia divorced Thomas (I don't know if that is the date of filing or the final decree.I'm working on getting a copy of the record.)Ca. 1896 Lydia m. Howard Miles (he appears to be listed in the 1900 census as "Howard Y."; the Pike Cemetery records list him as "Howard A." with no dates); he was b. Oct. 1860, Iowa, and he d. April 8, 1906.There were no children born to this marriage.
In the 1900 Census of Diamond Precinct, Whitman Co., WA, is Henry Stevenson, 18, with 5 others, all six listed as "Partner"s, just a few households from Edgar A. Torrance and his family.I'm quite certain that this is the s/o Lydia and Thomas Stevenson. On July 12, 1901 Henry Stevenson [I] married Salenda/Sarenda Mary Stilson b. March 3, 1884, d/o Charles Stilson (who, if I've got the cartloads of Stilsons right, is a brother of Leroy Stilson who m. Hester/"Hettie" Torrance, d/o William S. Torrance).Henry would have just had his 20th birthday and Salenda was 17.They had a daughter, Gladys Genevieve, b. March 14, 1902, d. May 25, 1918, at the age of 16.They also had a son, Henry S. Stevenson [II], b. April 16, 1903, d. Sept. 1, 1988, in Spokane, WA.On Nov. 29, 1905, Salenda Mary Stilson Stevenson m. Elmer E. Ertel and they had two daughters, Imo and Wilma.I have been unable to find a death record, divorce record, or census record after 1900 for Henry Stevenson [I] so I have no idea what happened to him after the birth of his son and before the second marriage of his wife. The death record of Gladys G. Stevenson lists her father as Henry S. Stevenson, as does the (long form) marriage record of Henry S. Stevenson [II] to Gertrude Maas. The short one lists the groom as Henry I. Stevenson.
On Feb. 16, 1939, Henry S. Stevenson of Spokane, WA, m. Gertrude Maas b. Sept. 16, 1918, Elgin, No. Dakota, d/o Henry Maas and Julia Fink, in Pend Oreille Co., WA.His father listed as Henry S. Stevenson and mother as Jalinda Stelson. The groom's age is shown as 35 and the bride's as 20.Children born to this marriage are Margaret Irene b. July 9, 1940; Mary Louise b. Sept. 20, 1843; Julianna Rae b. March 10, 1945; Helen Alice b. May 8, 1947; and Henry Silas Stevenson [III] b. Oct. 5, 1951 "no children."The information on the children listed here is from http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stilsongenealogy/stilsonbk30.htmhttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stilsongenealogy/stilsonbk30.htm posted by a member of the Stilson family.Gertrude Maas Stevenson's death date is given as June 6, 1974.I expect the "I." as this Henry's middle initial is a transcription error. It was the 5th child which (finally!) gave me the middle name of the three Henry's and made me realize that Henry Stevenson, s/o Lydia and Thomas had to have been Henry Silas Stevenson I.
In order to not make this look like just straight forward, easy genealogy, there are a couple of records which I'm not sure about:
There is a marriage on Sept. 27, 1969, of Henry S. Stevenson, Jr. and Eleanor M. Dietrick in Spokane, WA.No identifying info is included. Is this the marriage of Henry S. III?He would have been only 18 years old but his grandfather undoubtedly had died and his father would have become Henry S., Sr.Or had Henry S., Jr., and Gertrude divorced and this was a second marriage for him?Or is this an entirely different family?
There is also a marriage record of Henry S. Stevenson and Phyllis Jackson on June 29, 1934, in Spokane, WA.This could have been a short marriage of Henry S., Jr., or, again, it could have been a different family although I haven't found any other Stevenson families in the Spokane area with a Henry S.
Comments and additional information are appreciated.
