Hello, fellow Torrance researchers. This is my first posting at this site. I'm trying to untangle the Western Mass Torrances. They are quite confusing, but I can identify William of Enfield for you.
William TORRANCE. Son of John Torrance and Chloe Bartlett. Born on 1 Dec 1815 in Enfield, Hampshire Co, MA.William died in Keene,Cheshire Co, NH, on 3 Feb 1855; he was 39. From Amherst College Records: Prepared with private tutors. R. Baldwinsville, NY, 1845-46; taught Ann Arbor, Mich, 1846-48, Enfield,(MA) 1848-49; prin. acad. and H.S. Keene, NH, 1849-55. Died Keene, NH 3 Feb 1855. Bro: Dwight J. (Amherst College ex 1851)
William was the very much esteemed first principal of Keene High School in Keene, NH. You're right; William never married.
William's father, John, is, I'm pretty sure, the younger bro of Jeduthan (Sr). My line comes down from Jeduthan Sr's oldest daughter Elizabeth. She married a not-very-sterling character, John B MONTGOMERY who started a major feud between the Montgomery's and the Torrances. It all got quite nasty and resulted in John Montgomery and his son burning down Marlin Torrance's saw mill in 1854. The Montgomery's were arrested and charged but the trial ended with a hung jury. Both father and son were later acquitted when the case was retried. But family lore maintains that they were both guilty.
Looking forward to sharing Torrance info and getting some help straightening out the Williams and Johns and their respective wives.
