After checking out the 1850 census again and posting my response to Jan's post, I got very curious about whether I could get more information on this family.I couldn't find anything further on Thomas Torrance, so I searched for Lavina Torrance on familysearch.org in IL for 1860.I got a hit on Lavina, 36, b. NY, in the 1860 census in IL at Algonquin, McHenry Co.There was no original image on that site so I went to HeritageQuest Online; couldn't come up with Lavina no matter what I searched for, so I put in Torrance with no first name.I came up with Albert, 13, b. ditto the NY in the line above, in Grafton, McHenry Co. in the home of James and Maria Evans, he 30, b. England, she 40, b. NY.I also came up with Wilber Torrance, 16, b. Mass., in Algonquin, McHenry Co., with the Samuel Price family, listed as farm laborer.Incidentally, two doors away is Doreta Deurks??, 30, b. Germany, with husband Henry, 35, b. Germany, 3 children b. Germany and last child b. IL.(Remember the Dosetta/Doretta Beleau, b. Gmny, with Thomas Torrance family which I listed in the previous post?Except she was listed as 3 in 1850.)Knowing that Lavina was in the same area as Wilber, I went backward a page at a time from p. 77 (Wilber) to p. 34 and found Lavina Torrance, 36, b. NY, with children Dewit, 11, b. NH?; Edridge, 9, b. IL; Jerome, 9, b. IL; and Mary, 7, b. IL.Dewit may be a child of Lavina from a previous marriage. But it would appear from this information that Thomas and Mary had Truman b. 1834; Loring b. 1836; Elmer b. 1839; Wilber b. 1844; Albert b. 1846.If this is the case, Mary had her first child at about 15 and she had 5 sons in 12 years.Edridge, Jerome and Mary have to be children of Lavina since they were all b. after 1850.
Unfortunately, apparently the enumerators decided not to use the "marital status" column in this census so there is no indication whether Lavina is widowed but Thomas is not to be found in this census in IL or anywhere else, so far.
In 1870 I searched just for the surname Torrance in IL and got about 8 hits but none of them the Torrances listed above, so I have no idea where they went.
I did find one record which is a long shot but I'll run it up the flag pole and see how it flies.I found a death record for a John Albert Torrence, b. 12 July 1877, IL, to Albert Torrence, b. IL, and Anna Nichols, b. IL.He d. at Bowie, Montague, TX, on 16 Sept. 1957.I have nothing to identify this Albert Torrance, but the entire family must have upped stakes and gone somewhere besides IL.
