The Towrie surname is unique in Orkney - it's been here for centuries but only in one family - mine.
Here the surname is pronounced "Toory" but the similarity between the surnames intrigues me. The "towrie" spelling resulted from a number of recording blunders but it is first seen as "turrs" and "turri". From this, and the pronunciation, I am fairly sure the name derives from Lapland....the name Turie is found there.
However, has anyone traced the origin of the towery/towry name back to Scotland??? In particular Orkney?
