I am trying to confirm the parentage of Emily Townsley, born in Clapham,London birth registered Q3 1858 in Lambeth.
I am going to order the B/C next pay day but before I do that I wondered if anyone can help me.
I believe Emily emigrated to Canada shortly after the UK 1871 census & went on to marry Edwin Jennings 30/09/1876 in Toronto,York,Ontario & had at least 15 children. Her brother John Thomas Townsley may have been travelling with her,as may other members of her family.
My confusion is that some researchers on line have recorded Emily's parents as Thomas Townsley & Elizabeth Lee & her DOB as 05/11/1859. I believe her parents to be Thomas & Eliza Elton Martin, who married 03/10/1847 in London. It is the Martin family to whom I am connected so I don't want to spend loads of time researching the incorrect family.
John Thomas Townsley was definitely the son of Thomas & Eliza Elton Townsley. He was born 24/05/1853,in Lancaster & I have traced his baptism records which record Thomas Townsley & Eliza Elton Townsley formerly Martin as his parents.
I have been unable to trace Thomas & Eliza in 1851 but have traced the family in 1861 & 1871 (now living in London).(Father,Thomas,is absent in 1871 - possibly already in Canada). In both census Eliza's name is recorded as Elizabeth. I cannot trace the family after 1871 in the UK but they may have all emigrated to Canada by then.
A John Thomas Townsley was a witness to the marriage of Emily Townsley to Edwin Jennings, which makes me think that Eliza Elton Martin was indeed their mother.
I am a bit concerned about a couple of things. The fact that Eliza is always recorded as Elizabeth & that some researchers have Elizabeth Lee named as the mother. Also the DOB of Emily - 05/11/1859 - this cannot be correct if the birth of my Emily Townsley was registered Q3 1858. The problem is even if I get the B/C & it does show that Eliza Elton Martin was Emily's mother it doesn't prove that this was the same Emily who married Edwin Jennings in Canada!
