My g-g-grandmother on my mother's side was one Emily TOZER (b. Sutton, Surrey, 1869).According to her birth certificate Emily's mother was one Henrietta Tozer (formerly Gray)and her father was George Tozer, whose occupation in 1869 is given as 'laborer'.On Emily Tozer's 1891 marriage certificate (to one Henry Clark) her father's name is also given as George Tozer and his occupation as 'Bricklayer's Labourer'
On the 1861 marriage certificate of George Tozer and Henrietta Gray (in Bethnall Green in Middlesex), George Tozer's occupation is given as 'soldier' and his address as 'Wellington Barracks'.George Tozer's father is listed as 'John Tozer, Tailor'.George Tozer's age is given as 24 in 1861, which gives him a rough birthdate of 1837.
In the 1881 census online I have located the whole family of George and 'Harriet' (actually Henrietta) Tozer at 29 Mallard St., London, Middlesex.George Tozer is listed as having been born in 'Devon, England' and being 44 years of age - which again gives a rough birthdate of 1837.There are 6 children - Eliza (b. 1865); George Jr. (b. 1868); Emily (b. 1870); Harriet (b. 1872); Thomas (b. 1879) and Frank (b. 1877).I am 100% sure that this is the correct family as I have a photograph I took recently of Frank Tozer's gravestone in Doddinghurst cemetery in Essex (d. 1937) that my mother recalls as having been shown as that of 'great uncle Frank' when she was a small girl.
I cannot locate the family in the 1891 census that has been indexed so far, and have not had any joy with the 1901 census either (by which time George Tozer would have been 64, so possibly dead). As a result I can get no more precise place of birth than 'Devon' in 1837 and a father called John Tozer, who was a Tailor.
Does any of this ring any bells from anyone else's researches into the name?
