The Ad News, ourlocal free paper in Congleton,Cheshire has an article about an auction of historic papers being held on thursday March 7th in Swindon. The documents come from from a major archive of papers relating to the famous Trafford family who owned Swythamley Hall, and had extensive land holdings in north Staffordshire and Cheshire. One of the documents, dated 1708, prevents anyone other than William Trafford from holding the title of 'Head Baron' of the area. Document expert, Richard Westwood-Brookes, said"The document mentions that 'some persons being owners or inhabitants of new houses within the township have of late endeavoured to get themselves or their undertenants in the said office of 'Head Baron'. Other papers have info on the day to day financial affairsof the local manor and the oldest document appears to be concerning the settlement of a land dispute between the Trafford family and other landowners dated from the reign of Charles 1.
If anyone is interested in the sale (I realise time is short but the article has only just appeared) they should ring 01793 611340 or for details about the documents call Richard Westwood - Brookes on 01568 770133.
