By now you have probably found the info you seek as I see you posted this in 2004, but I found a James TRAILL in Nor. Ireland in Co. Down I believe it was from my own research on my Moody (Moodie-Mudie) family who also links to the Orkney area as well as Fife and Ayrshire, Scotland. Some of my Moody family went to Northern Ireland and was in Co. Donegal to start it seems but went to Co. Armagh, Co. Down and to Co. Londonderry before coming to North America. In my family tree I also have the SPENCE surname as well. My family seems to have come to America around c1750 and ended up York Co., Maine where I found the SPENCE link in my genealogy. This line was from Orkney as well. My Father's Ydna testing has shown our Haplotype to be of Norse extraction sometime waaaay back in our heritage and as the Moodie's of the Orkney's claim to be of Norse lineage, and as the Shetland Island Surname Project is showing several of the surnames there to be of the same Haplotype as my Father and also of Norse extraction, I think there may be more to this than we yet realize. I do hope you have found your missing link but wanted to give you perhaps some other places to search...like Northern Ireland for the Traill's as some of them were there as were many SPENCE's. You can review my Numerous postings on the Moody page here at Genforum especially my most recent ones on the Freeholder's lists and Ulster-Scots etc. Good Luck to you in your research.
