Fred C. Trappe of Des Plaines Services for Fred C. Trappe, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the Oehler Funeral Home Des Plaines Chapel, 2099 Miner St.(Northwest Highway/Route 14 at Rand Road), Des Plaines. Burial will follow at Ridgewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at the funeral home. Born Jan. 24, 1921, in Chicago, he died Thursday, Dec. 28, at Northwest Community Healthcare. A 1939 graduate of Lane Tech High School, Fred was a 30-year veteran of the Chicago Tribune, retiring in 1987, and a 66-year member of the International Association of Machinists. He was an avid traveler and rail fan, who in retirement, had been on the boards of the 20th Century Railroad Club, the Des Plaines Crimestoppers and the Des Plaines Lunkerbusters fishing club. Married for 33 years to his wife, Laverne Trappe (nee Wurster), he is also survived by his daughter, Renee Trappe (friend Richard Radek); sister, Cornelia Kahila; sisters-in-law, Gerry Wurster, Rita (Bob) Schwarz and Lavonne Burkhart; nephews, Wayne (Linda) Kahila, Roger (Jan) Kahila and Howard Alan Wurster Sr.; nieces, Joyce Ratliff, Susan (Bruce) Modica and Geri (Bob) Heim; 18 great-nieces and -nephews, 15 great-great- nieces and -nephews; and his beloved Michigan family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carole Trappe (nee Burkhart); and brothers-in-law, Oiva E. Kahila, Howard C. Wurster and Roland Burkhart.
