You are right Maryellen about it being a casual thing. I found a record from the Mormons which kind of go along with what you are saying. Their family tree lists William Trego1692-1769, but they list his son Benjamin 1730-abt 1786 as Trago. Of course his son Benjamin (b.1778) is where my line traces too. If memory serves me correct doesnt Benjamin`s ( b 1730 ) Will list his name as both Trego and Trago in the same document? Ive looked high and low for the " stolen horse theory " passed down in my family and havent found a trace of it. I certainly dont discredit it either, if it was anyone, it had to be the Benjamin ( b.1778 ) as everyone after him ( including his wife )can be accounted for, and everyone before him would no doubt be pointed out in the many records/books/etc about them. With him, you get a mention of his birth, listed in his fathers will along with his mother, a few census records, and then nothing... not a thing, almost like he didnt exist, not even a known grave.
Of course as they say... stories age better with time. The thing that really throws me is if he was an such an outcast, then why do I have multiple pictures of my great-great grandmother Rachel ( French ) Trago ( 1837-1924 ) along with her daughers and daughter in laws taken when going to Trago/Trego family gatherings in Pennsylvania in the 1880`s?
