Katy Brown 11/09/11
Katy, here is what I have, have not dwelt with it in yrs....
6-1)Joseph or“Jonah” Trent - (Jr.) (b.___-___-1821)(d.)
-see pg. #691, item (#6-2) same person?
-his sibling is on pg. #752
-he is listed in 1880 Johnson Co., TN census in District #1, HH#159 with his daughter Martha, age 24 yrs. old. He is a widowerunless he is age 59 & with a wife, age 24. How does he tie to Alex.(Jr.) & Jane (Burton) Trent?
-parents were Josiah or “Jesse” & _________(________) Trent of VA-TN
-born in Henry Co., VA
-died in _____________ Co., TN at age ___
-buried in ______________ Cemetery in _____________ Co., TN
-Joseph or “Jonah” (Jr.) md. Martha “Maude” Cobb of TN -also see pg. #603, item (#5-2)
(b.)(d.)
-parents were _________________________ Cobb of TN
-born in _____________
-died in _____________ Co., TN at age ___
-buried in _____________________ Cemetery in Hawkins Co., TN
-they were md. ____________ in ____________ Co., TN
-he was ___ yrs. old, she was ___ yrs. old
-they had ___ children:
7-?) names, dates?
-no details yet!
Note: Are these previous Josiah-“Jesse” & Joseph-“Jonah” related to the Alexander Trent of Prince Edward Co., VA, who died in 1815, left no Will, but had an estate inventory returned to the Prince Edward Co. Court on 9-18-1817. There are two men mentioned in it, a Josiah & a Jonah as descendants, Josiah moved to Hopkins Co., KY about 1838 and died there by October, 1840! I don’t know what happened to Jonah, but a Josiah md. an Elizabeth Cody of VA! They are also related to other Archdeacons & Cody lines out of Prince Edward Co., VA! There is of course the possibility that these two are sons (gransons) of Alexander (Sr.) (b.ca.1726) and/or the sons (grandsons) of another totally different Trent, but the TN Folks claim that Alex. (Jr.) had a Joseph or Jesse of some combination in his lineage lines.
NOW IN looking for the other here is one little mention of another COBB, abt. half way down.....
-Thomas R. md. Sarah Gilbert of VA-KY-TN
-787-
-she has a sister named Eleanor Gilbert who was the 2nd. wife of Newton Lawson of TN. Both sisters are d/o John M & Mary“Polly” (Marshall) Gilbert & thus connect to both Janet Geranmayeh of SC and to Sam Lawson of IN.
-she also has a sister, Malinda Gilbert who md. 2nd. on April 2, 1883, Curren Lawson of TN, son of Banks Lawson of TN. Accordingly this penson file verifies that Sarah Gilbert was the wife of Thomas Trent. Her sister, Susan Gilbert married Abija Martin, who was the brother of Elizabeth Martin of TN who md. Wilkerson Lawson, a cousin of Current Lawson!
-Malinda (Gilbert) Lawson filed for a widows’s pension and in 1880 she was living in Hancock Co., TN with a Thomas R. & Sarah (Gilbert) Trent. She is identified as the sister-in-law! Soher sworn statement ofMarch 2, 1917 says: “That between the years of 1850 & 1860 I lived with my brother John Gilbert near Lee Valley, P.O. Hawkins Co., TN, and that my father’s name was John Gilbert and my mother’s name was Polly. John, Hiram, Bill, Joseph, Eli, Jimmy, Hester, Ellen, Syntha, Nancy and Sallie Gilbert were my brothers and sisters during this date, all of whom are dead now except for myself.”
-the best we ( I ) can figure is that this is a logical place for the lineage upline of Katy Brown in AZ to start... ie./ in that Malinda Gilbert of (b.5-__-1846) in Hawkins Co., TN & (d. 4-8-1917) in Hancock Co., TN, will marry a Curren W. Lawson of (1844-1911), apparently after the death of his 1st. wife, one Thursia Parvin who was (b.ca.1809) in NC and who (d. aft.1880-probably in Hawkins Co., TN). For Malinda is recorded as marrying Curren on 4-2-1883 in TN. Malinda was (apparently) md. (before this) to a Jesse (Trent) Cobb of (1859- 1928) in abt. 1877; to a Jacob F.Mullins of (1848-1912) on 4-10-1879 & divorced on 4-7-1884; to a Newton “Newt” Kenner of (1852-1908) and then, of course, to Curren W. Lawson last!
-so if we trace backwards, we have Curren W. Lawson (b.5-___-1844) in Hawkins Co., TN) & (d.7-25-1911) in Hawkins Co., TN) who was the s/o Banks Lawson of (b.1801-1809) in NC & d. aft 1880 in Hawkins Co., TN); THEN moving forwards we have William J.(esse) Lawson (b.12-18-1878 in Hawkins Co., TN) & (d.2-15-1953) in Hawkins Co., TN). He was md. to Bessie Cleo Willliams (b.1-12-1899 of Hawkins Co., TN) & (d.4-12-1999 in Church Hill, Hawkins Co., TN) on 3-24-1918 in Hawkins Co., TN. We then have William H.(ubert) Lawson (b.8-30-1919) in Greenville, Greenville Co., SC & (d.3-9-2004) in Phoenix, Maraopia Co., AZ who was the s/o Wm. Jesse of Hawkins Co., TN and Wm. H.md. Adele C.(hristine) Gibson (b.6-1-1922) in Hancock Co., TN & (d.11-24-1997) in Los Alamos, Sandoval Co., NM. Katy was born then to this couple...! She currently lives in AZ.
-788-
-this Thomas R. is probably the one who bought the “heirship rights” to some land that was owned by a James Rhea of TN via a “1839 Deed - James Rhea to Thomas Trent, Hawkins Co., TN, Bk. #17, pg. #215, James Rhea to Thomas Trent, registered on 27 November 1840, dated 8 January 1939 - James Rhea of Claiborne conveys to Thomas Trent of Hawkins County for $25.00 his interest & claim that he has by heirship of, in, and to a tract of land in Claiborne County of the estate of Joseph Ray, deceased, containing 125 acres adjoining land of John Ray, Jemina and Lewis Johnson.(Signed)-James Rhea (Witnessed)-Richard Mitchell, John Seal, John Davis. (the above Deed comes to me via the Jarvis Family Web site and Sharon Carter of VA.
-we also know we can add in Pleasant G. Murrell who md. Susan Trent, the daughter of our James B. O. & Elizabeth (Johnson) Trent of TN and we have an additional connection then between the above Martin & our TN Trent families!
(b.ca.1820-21)(d.___-___-1866 or later?)
-parents were John M. & Mary “Polly” (Marshall) Gilbert of VA-KY-TN
-John M. was the s/o Joseph Hiram & Nancy Anne (_______) Gilbert of VA-TN. Joseph H. was (b.ca.1750-55) in Montgromery Co., VA and he (d.12-17-1804) on the north side of Wallens Ridge in Lee Co., VA.
-John M. & Mary “Polly” had twelve(12) children and they were from Lee Co., VA originially. However, he was a Magistrate in Hawkins Co., TN in April-1847.
-John M.’s father was a Joseph Hiram Gilbert of Lee Co., VA on which there is expansive information via David Jones, Janet G., and others- all contained on the Jarvis Family Web Site, so I will not repeat those details here!
-We know from the 1850 Census for Hawkins Co., TN that Mary Gilbert is a “widow” who is living in Dist. #2.
-In that household there is a Malissa Trent, age 6. There is also a Malissa Trent, age 14 in the household of Thomas & Sarah (Gilbert) Trent, so they could not be the same person. That being true then the two little girls in their house in the 1840 would be the Malissa & Nancy who are under five yrs. of age and which shows his age to be in the 20-30 yrs. range.
Those factors are ones that say, to me, that both Thomas & Sarah were (b. ca.1818-1820) in TN!
-On 12-30-1861 a James Gilbert enlisted in Co. E of the 43rd. TN Infantry (CSA) along with a neighbor, Curren Lawson. He rose to rank of Corporal by 5-10-
-789-
1862 and is reported to have died on 11-20-1862 in Hawkins Co., TN while home on furlough. And there is a James Gilbert who joined the 8th. TN Cavalry with a Curren Lawson late in 1863. His grandfather’s Will, dated 1804 in Lee Co., VA named his children as: Thomas P. Gilbert, James M. Gilbert, Mary “Polly” Gilbert, Joseph H. Gilbert & John M. Gilbert. John M. was (b.1795-Lee Co., VA) (d.1845-Hawkins Co.,TN).
I have no dates on Mary “Polly” Marshall of TN. I also believe that this Joseph H. md. a Martha “Betsy” Ray-(Rhea) of TN who may be related to the James Rhea that Thomas bought the “heirship rights” from !!
-born in Lee Co., VA
-died in Hancock Co., TN at age 45-46
-buried in _________________ Cemetery in HancockCo., TN
-they were md. (ca.1834) in Lee Co., VA
-he was (abt.29) yrs. old, she was (abt.31-32) yrs. old
-they more then likely moved from SWVA to Hawkins Co., TN after the tax list was made in 1836 in Hawkins County! We also know that they were residing in Hancock Co., TN in 1850 and in the War Gap District or District #10 of Hancock Co., TN in the 1870 Census. BUT Ihave a question in that this may refer to the Thomas R. Trent, who was the son of Richard Trent and not to this Thomas Trent.
-in 1880 Hancock Co., census he was 54, she was 60 and they had in the home, children of: Nancy-22, John-18, James-15, William-13, Elizabeth-11, Mary Ann-9, Hiram-5-(would he be a son of Thomas & Sarah or William & (Eleander?) and a Thomas-2. (This may be Thomas P. Trent, the son of William & Eleander (Lawson) Trent of TN
-they had nine(9) children:
7-1)Malissa Trent - (b.ca.1836)(d.)
-parents were Thomas R. & Sarah (Gilbert) Trent of TN
THEN THERE IS this little bit from another section....!!
6-2)Joseph “Fields” Trent - (b.ca 1807 or 1811)(d.6-17-1888)
-for some strange reason which we don’t know, and according to David Jones, this Joseph appears to be the one who in the 1840 Hawkins Co., TN census was using or was called “Field Trent”....
-we also know, according to David that this Joseph appears to have had a brother named Benjamin Trent, that he, and thus Joseph too, both were brothers to a George Trent of TN
-David also speculates that according to common naming patterns that the “Fields” would most likely, less likely from a grandmother, came from the name of his mother!
-parents were Jesse (Sr.) & _____________ (Field) Trent of TN
-born in Hawkins Co., TN
-died in Hawkins Co., TN at age 75 to 81
-buried in _____________________ Cemetery in Hawkins Co., TN
-Joseph “Fields” md. Sarah Cobb ofTN
(-see pg. #627, item (#5-?)
-707-
-her sister Martha Cobb md. Benjamin Trent of TN. She’s also a sister-in-law to their brother William Trent! There’s a record of her appearance as a character witness for her sister Sarah (Cobb) Trent when she filed her mother’s pension request in regards to the death of a son in the Civil War.The record states “the hus- band of the claimant and my deceased husband were brothers”. David Jones has said “that would make Joseph Trent the younger brother of Jesse Trent, instead of the son of Jesse OR both Joseph & Benjamin Trent were sons of the above Jesse Trent! But I am carrying Jesse and Benjamin Trent as sons of Alexander (Jr.) (b.1759), Rev. War soldier and with differ- ent mothers! As to the supposed differences in their birth dates, it may be as David suggests that Jesse (Jr.) (b.1803), Benjamin (b.1803) and Joseph (b.1813) are sons of the above Jesse (Sr.) (b.1775) and not as traditional TN Trent genealogy has said, “sons of Alex. (Jr.) (b.1759) & Jane (Burton) Trent”. And if so, then they need to go in under the Jesse Trent (Sr.) as his sons!
(b.ca. 1821)(d. aft. 1880)
-parents were Joel & Sarah (_________) Cobb of TN
-born in Hawkins Co., TN
-died in Hawkins Co., TN over age 59-60 yrs. old
-buried in ______________________ Cemetery in Hawkins Co., TN
-they were md. __-___-1837 in Hawkins, later to be Hancock Co., TN
-he was 24 yrs. old, she was (abt. 16-17 yrs. old
-they had eight(8) children:
THEN ON THE TN Benjamin, I have this but no COBB......
5-10)Benjamin Trent - (b.___-___-1803)(d.)
-parents were Alexander (Jr.) & Jane (Burton) Trent of VA-TN
-born in Hawkins Co., TN
-died in Hawkins-Hancock Co., TN at age ___
-buried in _____________ Cemetery in Hawkins-Hancock Co., TN
-Benjamin md. 1st. Elizabeth Winstead of TN
-details will be in later lineage section!
-then Benjamin md. 2nd. “widow” Martha (Mabe) Smith of TN
-details will be in later lineage section!
AND IT COULD BE THAT THE TN and VA folks have these two BENJAMIN'S Confused......!!
4-8)Benjamin Trent - (b.)(d.)
-now Earl Cole of TN added a Benjamin here?
-parents were Alexander (Sr.) & Elizabeth (Scott) Trent of VA
-born in Campbell or Henry Co., VA
-died in ____________ Co., TN at age ___
-buried in __________________ Cemetery in ____________ Co., ___
-Benjamin md. ______________________________ of __
-659-
(b.)(d.)
-parents were ___________________________________ of __
-born in _____________
-died in _____________ Co., ___ at age ___
-buried in ______________ Cemetery in ____________ Co., ___
-they were md. ___________ in _____________ Co., ___
-he was ___ yrs. old, she was ___ yrs. old
-they had ___ children:
5-?) names, dates?
-need details, if any here and above?
THEN THERE IS THIS CONNECTED TO THE ABOVE BENJ. OF TN.....
then Benjamin (Sr.) (#5-8), pg. #1004 md. 2nd. “widow” Martha (Mabe) Smith of TN
-she has at least several children by a previous marriage, probably
to Moses Smith (Sr.) of Hancock-Hawkins Co., TN
-Moses Smith (Jr.) (b.ca.1846-48)(d.4-27-1865)
-he was one of the locals, mentioned by Douglas Trent also, who died in the explosion of the river boat named Sultanta seven miles north of Memphis, TN
-Mary J. Smith(?) (b.ca. (-___-1850-51)(d.)
-Mary J. Smith would md. a Henry Biggs of TN on 1-10-1881.
-Rozanna “Roxie/Roxey” Smith(?) (b.ca. 1856)(d.)
-"Roxie" would marry a William M. BIGGS of TN the brother of above Henry Biggs! So she must have md. a Mr. Moses Smith (Sr.) of TN. THEY apparently had no children as per Sandy Herve in 2011 and family affidavit by her brother William Mabe, Mr. Moses Smith Sr. was sent to the Penitentary in Richmond, Henrico Co., VA in abt. 1848 and he died there a few yrs. later on 3-1-1853. William Mabe was a resident of Blackwater, Hancock Co., TN and on January 6, 1882 he was 65 yrs. old.
THERE IS an 1880 Hawkins Co., TN Cenuse record that shows his household with a Mary Smith, age 28, (b.1852-53) who is a stepdaughter and a great-step-grand daughter named Josephine Smith who is age 5, I have no details on these but we can assume they are related to Martha (Mabe) Smith of TN
- “widow” Mabe-Smith lived close to Joseph & Sarah (Cobb) Trent and had done so “since well beyond the war”!
-1015-
-we also know now from discovery work by David Jones that she made a statement in the Pension Case of Melville Trent in 12-1886 that shows that she was the “widow” of Benjamin Trent (Sr.) as she says she was his widow and HE is deceased!
Then Sandy says that according to the Pension Record she has, that Martha (Mabe) (Smith) Trent applied for a pension based on the Civil War record of Moses Smith (Jr.), her son by Moses Smith (Sr.) of TN. That pension record says that he enlisted on 10-5-1864 as a Private in the 4th KY Cavalry, Vol., Co. K, in Lexington, KY at the age of 16. He was mustered in on 10-26-1864 in same company in Louisville, KY. He is showed by record as having dark hair, blue eyes, dark complexion and was 5’-6” tall. I do not know if she got a pension based on his service or not?
(b.ca.1826 or 1832)(d.5-3-1883)
-parents were Reuben & _________ (_________) Mabe of TN
-born in ____________
-died in Hawkins Co., TN at age ___
-buried in _____________________ Cemetery in Hawkins Co., TN
-they were md. 8-15-1861 in Hawkins Co., TN by John E. Starnes, JP
-he was (54-58) yrs. old, she was (29-35) yrs. old
-they had ___ children: I have a possible three(3)?
6-1)Jesse Trent -(b.ca.___-___-1864)(d.___-___-1934)
-on 4-27-1865 he is shown as being abt. one yr. old
-parents were Benjamin (Sr.) & Martha (Mabe) (Smith) Trent of TN
-born in Hawkins Co., TN
-died in ____________ Co., ___ at age ___
-buried in ________________ Cemetery in __________ Co., ___
-Jesse md. ________________________________ of __
(b.)(d.)
