Scott, the first paragraph is the one I wrote in the chapter of John Scalf, Sr. according to what Barbara had told me about the tax lists. The second paragraph was what she said to me in the message she sent.
I agree with Sharon on who it might have been. I was just wondering if anyone had been able to confirm it since that correspondence with Barbara.
She did tell me that the others were her line and she seemed to have them pretty well documented so I wondered if it was possible that Alex that married Polly had come into the area of Russell by 1797 from somewhere.
I do know that Elmer Scalf believed that Polly married Alex the RWS, but as I stated before, he was almost 30 years her senior and of course we know that he married Jane Burton so he could not have been the one.
I agree with Barbara and Sharon, it could have been Alex the RWS in Russell at that time and then moved on down to Hawkins.
Thanks for the tax lists Sharon. It helps to have those since I can't seem to find the ones Barbara sent me! I'm sure they're packed away with something somewhere.
It would make sense that Alex (RWS) was the one in Russell since he shows up after he married Jane, then he is gone. They were probably just passing through. I suppose if Alex that married Polly was the one in Russell, he would have continued to be listed in Russell after 1797.
