Hi Roger,
I have collected more data on Treweeks and the many spellings than I ever started out to do... But, I can share this much.First, the Trewick family from northern England, more specifically, Northumberland is not the same family as the Cornish variations of the name. The northern England branch actually is of a suspected scandinavian origin. This particular fact was clarified for me on my recent trip. The Cornish branch all got their name from a place in Stithians Parish, "Treweege".. or homestead by/or in the wood. The earliest form of the name was Trewyk. I just returned two days ago from a "Family History" vacation to Cornwall to do more research on my branch of the Treweeks. From what I have read in a variety of places, the Traywicks, Traweeks and those variations did in fact immigrate from Cornwall around 1700... and were originally in the South Eastern United States. They were decended from Robarte Treweek who was from either Cambourne or Redruth Cornwall.I can't remember which. I was fortunate to meet members of two surviving Treweek families, one still carrying the surname Treweek, and the other, the son of a Mom who was a Treweek. There are more Treweeks (and other spellings) in Australia than in the rest of the world combined! And certainly more outside of Cornwall than left there. Most of my distant relatives are in Australia.
Did you know that Randy Travis, the country singer is really Randy Trawick? He goes with the early immigrants branch.
My ancestors came over in the late 1800's when all the tin mines collapsed and there was no work for miners. They settled first in Calif. then to Nevada, Montana and finally ended up in South Dakota at the very large Homestake Gold Mine.I still have Treweek relatives living in South Dakota, some in California and other Treweek's in FLorida.
I hope this helps you out some..
Judy
