Cora Ayers 3/25/07
My memory was a little off...but, it was the year before Ephraim Ayers was captured:
"Enoch (Mallory) was a native of America, and lived in Wells Township (Ogden Mallory was first settler, Vermont in 1775.He joined Gen. Burgonye in Canada in 1777, where he was taken prisoner at Skeensborough and carried to Albany jail.He escaped to Canada the same year. (Archives of Ontario, 2nd Report, p. 470. Canada.) His land in Vermont was confiscated by the State of Vermont, at the request of Zacheous Mallory, who remainded loyal to the United States.Zacheous' petition claimed that "Enoch Mallory Departed his Country and Joined the Enemies thereof by which traterous act he has forfitted his interests to this state."(Vermont State Papers, Vol. 1. p. 236)
“In the Revolutionary War, one of Peter’s (Mallory) decendants, Enoch Mallory, deserted from the American Army.He crossed the ice on the St Lawrence River in a hail of bullets, to join the English army drawn up on the opposite bank. There he changed his uniform in view of the enemy. After the war, he was given a grant of land in 1779, where Mallorytown was to rise. His brother, Daniel, who had been living in Vermont, settled in Mallorytown in 1784.” Mallorys in the Commonwealth, Chapter Ten, North America, pages 129-30.” Sheila Mallory Smith(NOT ME, I'm a different Mallory Smith)(NOTE Daniel Mallory was son of Nathaniel Mallory and removed to Canada in 1785 ae 15.) His parents and siblings followed in 1790.)
(5) Enoch Mallory 8 Jul 1744 Ripton Parish Stratford CT (NOTE: Stratford Vital Records indicate this Enoch died 10 Feb 1745VR Vol LE R p 50 and that the Enoch of Vt and Canada was a son of Peter.(See Brockville Recorder Ontario CAN which says Enoch, son Peter and Unas d 16 Oct 1831 in his 86th year)(Canadian immigration records show Enoch as age 37 in 1783) Enoch settled in Augusta Twp and later moved to the Mallorytown area of Yonge Twp. d 16 Oct 1831 Yonge Mallorytown Cem.= c 1768 (1) Huldah French28 Sep 1743 Stratford, Ct d before 1790(2) 1792 Eunice French b. c 1749 Fairfield, Ct (On military records his name was listed as Enos and he was listed among the rank and file...Elisha and Jeremiah were listed as drummers) (John French c 1720 bp 27 May 1722 Stratford Ct = Elizabeth Nichols d 30 Jan 1767 Huntington Ct) (Capt Joseph Nichols = Mary Curtiss)(Samuel French 15 May 1687 Bradford Abbas Dorsetshire England, the Joiner d 3 Sep 1763 Huntington bur Old Cem east of Huntington Center= Mary Price) (Samuel French 7 Oct 1655 South Perrott Dorset Co ENGbp 25 Oct 1655= Susannah) (rev Jeremiah French 1623 Saxmundenham ENG d 17 May 1765 Bradford Abbas bur Church of the Virgin Mary Bradford Abbas= Elizabeth Horsey) (Thomas French = Marjory Knight) Note: Huldah and Eunice were first cousins to Abiah Beardlsey (Sat Oct 29, 1831 At Yonge, on Sun. last, Enoch Mallory one of the first settlers of the country aged 86 (Reids Death Notices 1810 – 1849)
(note: In the work, Samuel French, the Joiner , it is said that Nathaniel Mallory founder of Mallorytown, was son of Daniel Malllory and Sarah Lee.This is NOT correct.Ihave pages from a family bible that Nathaniel's son John L Mallory gave to his granddaughter on the occasion of her birth. It contains names, dates of birth, marriages, etc. They lived in Fairfield Ct (Redding) and had close association with the Mallorys of Danbury (Mallory Hat Compan y.)
(NOTE: The French Family lived nearNathaniel Mallory in Newtown Ct and the wives (Huldah and Eunice French)of Enoch were related to Abiah Beardsley who married Nathaniel Mallory.Abiah was the daughter of Elizabeth French and Israel Beardsley.Nathaniel’s proposed sister, Mary Polly Mallory, married Enoch’s son Jeremiah.)
I suggest that the jailers at that time were either very careless or perhaps could be bribed as Caleb Mallory also escaped from the jail, but atRutland Vt.
(5) Caleb Mallery Jr 23 Oct 1749 New Milford, Ct UEL 1782 NY to Shelburne, NS 1783 with family of four= 17 Mar 1768 Washington Ct (listed under Woodbury marriages) Mary Ferry 1753 (1790 Census in Huntington Town, Ct) Caleb apparently returned to the US alone. By 1790 his children were of age and his wife may have died.(Note: A Caleb Mallory bur Pine Grove Cem in Lower Burton, across the river from Maugerville..could be Caleb Jr.)C. Mallory was a surveyor and worked at a general store at Eaton’s corner, Quebec in about 1822.This C Mallory left Eaton’s corner with no information on where he went. The following is a guess based solely on name and location(Mary Ferry, was named as the wife of Caleb Mallory in the will of her father, Joseph Ferry of Woodbury Ct)
I Caleb Mallory of Woodbury, do freely acknowledge That I have sundry times, since the fifth day of March, drank Bohea tea (English Tea), and have said that I did not know nor care for the continental congress, nor their doings which I am now fully convinced was wrong in me, & for which I am very sorry, as I thereby have given just occasion for offense to the good people of this town, and this country in general; and I hereby faithfully promise, for the future,, not to do, nor say any thing, that that be violation of andy doings of said congress; as I am not convinced, that the doings of the said congress are reasonable, and saluatary for this Cournty.Woodbury, August 7th 1775.Caleb mallery.
The above aknowledgement being made before the committee of inspection, for said Woodbury the same is accepted by them as satisfactory; he plublishing the said announcement in the public newspapers.By the order of the committees, Daniel Sherman, chairman.A true copy examined, by Increas Moseley, Jr. Clerk.

On Thursday night last, broke gaol in Rutland, Caleb Mallory, who was confined for passing counterfeit money.Said Mallory is about 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, grey eyes, about fifty five years old, bald on the forepart and crown of the head, his hair short and of a dark color. It is supposed he has made his way toward Canada, where his family resides.Whoever shall take up said Mallory, and return him to the keeper of the gaol in Rutland shall be entitled to take the above reward, all the necessary charges paid, by Henry GouldRutland May 1?, 1806
Zaccheus Mallory was probably Zaccheus Jr,though I don't know this for certain.Decendants removed to Mallory's Bush (Jay Essex Co NY) and then to Troupsburg, Steuben Co NY.A decendant, Zaccheus, removed from there to PA.
ET Mallory (Ezekiel Truesal) wrote an account that said most of the Mallorys in Canada were from a group of brothers that had come from England to Ct , Aaron, Caleb, William Noble , etc. This account doesn't appear to be accurate. He said theywere weathly (Caleb was insolvent).Aaron settled at Shelburne, buthe wasn't a brother, though they were all related.
