I've been reviewing details of my PRESTON family from Haddington, East Lothian, where my 3xgtgdparents John PRESTON & Marion WATSON marr in 1816. I have re-interpreted the surname of Marion WATSON's mother such that her parents are Adam WATSON & Marion TULLEP, the latter in turn was bpt Marion TUTTOP b 23 Dec 1758 in Haddington, of Archibald TUTTOP & Alison MUNDY. Further, Archibald TUTTOP was b 13 Mar 1733 Haddington, of Archbald TUTTOP & Katharine TROTTER.
This is such a unusual surname, even with its umpteen variations, that this seems a good lineage. But I now see from an admittedly rather quick look at this surname board that opinion is that TUTTOP and like variations come from TUDHOPE and its variations, with a seeming focus in Lesmahagow in the 1600s.
My family line looked like a neat bundle of TUTTOPs from 1733 until 1785, but now I cannot be so sure. Has anyone else got Lothian TUDHOPEs etc? Might this be a permanent surname change to TUTTOP, or might it revert?
