Generation II
Moses Tullis II
Moses Tullis moved from Virginia to what is now Lincoln County (formerly Wilkes County). Georgia in 1784 with his wife and family. At that time Lincoln County was an unbroken wilderness. He was one of the hardy pioneers who felled the forest, subdued the wilderness and laid the foundation of our great and glorious commonwealth, the pried of every Georgian. After living here for several years, the family moved to Edgefield Distirct, South Carolina, where he lived out his life (1817). His wife. Letitia, was still living there in 1820.
We aren't sure how many children Moses and Letitia had, my ancestor was Moses Tullis who married Polley Blalock and moved to Marion County, Georgia, where he was one of the largest plantaion owners and owned of many slaves. We have a copy of his Bible record which will be shown here as copied from the original. However, ad you may note, they only list ten of their twenty children. Some marriage dates are given without namin the spouse.Moses Tullis died 1844, widower whos wife had preceded him in death, 1839.Probate records show sons Moses Tullis and James M. (Monroe) Tullis as administrators of the estate.
Moses Tullis III
Moses Tullis, born 1777 probably in Virginia, later lived in Edgefield co., SC and married Polly Blalock in 1800.They were in Edgefield in 1804 when Moses IV was born. They lived in Lincoln Co., GA and were active in the Goshen Baptist Church in Marcy 1825 (called Soap Creek until 1793 -then Rocky Springs until 1817, then changed to Goshen). Goshen Baptist Church was located two miles east of Goshen in part of Lincoln Co.That had been Wilkes Co.In the proceedings of the Baptist church at Rocky Springs, and afterwards at Goshen .. Moses Tullis resigned at the meeting and asked William Stokes be appointed in his place. (It is not known what his position was.)
Moses Tullis IV
Moses Tullis, b 1804 son of Moses Tullis and Polly Blalock, married Mariah H. Maddox. They lived in Monroe, Marion and Muscogee Counties GA. They sold out and came to LA in 1857 to Bienville Parish and settled in Sparta area. They had nine children and some of them were already married with families of their own when they made the move. They were farmers and bought land from William A Maddox.
Before leaving Georgia, they had sold their property, 18 Apr 1857 to William W Barbaree, both of Chattahoochee Co., Ga for $535.It was the north 1/2 of lot of land situated in the 32 District originally Lee, now Muscogee Co. Lot #173, containing 100 1/4 acres.Signed: Moses Tullis Witnesses: Green Taylor, Mary Ann E. Taylor
In 1828, Moses and Mariah were living in Monroe Co., Ga in Captain Bellamy's District, they owned 52 acres on Towerlagee Creed District, five #51 adjacent to lands of George Driskell.
Moses Tullis died 1869 in Bienville Parish, La. Leaving his wife and nine children. We have the probate records. mariah sold all the property and after 1880 went to Texas to be near her daughters Mary Ann Latitia Taylor, and Martha McGlaun.Catherine evdently didn't marry. She and her mother made counterpanes and crocheted many things for the families.she had brought her black boiling pot from Go to La, now to TX.We have nto found where she is buried.Probably Robertosn Co., Tx.
I hope this will help you.I have copied some extracts from Zola Scott Hardy'sbook showing Moses Tullis I, II, III, IV.
I have not been able to fit my ancestors into these just yet.I purchased her book hoping I could find a link but so for I have not been able too.
My other friend sent an e-mail back to me and said that out ancestor might be John Tullis but we have not fount out for sure.If you run across anything that you think might help us out please let us know.Thanks.
