Gilbert Rex Tunnell, 98, of Greeneville, Greene Co TN,
formerly of Kingsport, Sullivan Co TN, went to be with the
Lord, November 2, 2008 at his son’s home.
Gilbert was born in Van Hill, Tennessee to the late Creed
and Mary Jane Snader Tunnell. He was retired from Eastman
Kodak Company after 39 years of service. He also worked
for Holston Ordinance Company during World War II and the
Korean War. Gilbert graduated in 1928 from Baileyton High
School. He was the oldest living member of St. Luke’s
United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of The
Building Committee and numerous church and conference
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his
wife, Jessie Parker Tunnell; sisters, Sallie Barnard,
Jessie Barrett; and his brother, Steve Tunnell.
Surviving are his children, sons, Rex Tunnell and wife
Martha, Greeneville, TN, and Gary Lynn Tunnell and wife
Lynnie, Dalton, GA; grandchildren, Gregory Rex Tunnell,
Greeneville, TN, Lisa Tunnell, Kingsport, TN, William BoBo
Majors and wife Marian, Tulahoma, TN, Mark Inman Majors
and wife Heather, Dalton, GA, Andrew Wiley Tunnell and
wife Kristian, Birminghamn, AL, Benjamin Lynn Tunnell and
wife Brandie, Tallahassee, FL; twelve great-grandchildren;
sisters, Bett Miller and Lenore Hylemon, both of Kingsport,
TN; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, November 7, 2008 at East Lawn
Funeral Home from 1 to 2 p.m. Funeral Services will be
conducted in the chapel at 2 p.m. with Reverend Homer
Graveside services will be conducted immediately following
the funeral service. Pallbearers will be The Adult Men’s
Bible class of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the
nurses and staff of Amedisys Hospice Services of
Greeneville, TN. Memorial Contributions may be made to St.
Luke’s United Methodist Church, 2600 E. Center Street,
to place a tribute to the life of Gilbert Tunnell or a
condolence to the family.
