I do a lot of looking at census documents and other public documents. In his will of 1833, John Tunnell, husband of Ester Essman, bequeaths various goods to each of his children. These children are listed in various parts of the will and match "Notable Southern Famlies".A portion of the will reads"...my will further is that my two sons, vis, James and Wesley keep the horse beast each on which they claim.
There is a child of appropriate age and sex in the household of John Tunnell in the 1820 and 1830 Census to account for James.
The family of James Tunnell and Sara Ann Tarver appear where expected in the Census of 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880.I show James as born 11 Jan 1813 and dieing 24 Oct 1897 in Chilton county AL.Other than your birth year of 1817, I do not see a lot of difference.
I have a 222 page census review document I could send you.The CRD attempts to trace the movement of the family of James and Sara Ann through census documents and other public postings.
