Leta Mildred Thacker, 82, departed this life on Tuesday, March 22, 2010, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Sullivan Co TN.
Mildred was born in Van Hill, TN, on September 18, 1927, to the late Luna and Bonnie Gardner Tunnell, and had spent most of her life in Kingsport. Mildred was employed at First Baptist Church Nursery where she developed loving relationships with many of the children she cared for. She spent her life gathering treasures and was an avid doll collector and loved her baby dolls. Mildred was an accomplished quilter and left a legacy of beautiful hand pieced and hand quilted works of art. She also produced many lovely items of needlework. Mildred loved people and had many friends in the community and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mildred was a member of Van Hill Methodist Church and attended church at First Assembly of God. Mildred was a member of East Tennessee / Southwest Virginia Retirees.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, E. C. Thacker; a son, Carson Cheryl Hylemon; three brothers, Ralph Tunnell, Cecil Tunnell, and Dewey Tunnell; and two sisters, Clover Jackson and Maude Gordon.
Mildred is survived by her son, Tom Hylemon and wife Jan; sister, Jimmie Adams and husband Lynn of Maitland, FL; granddaughter, Holly Hylemon Harris and husband Allen; grandson, Heath Hylemon; four great grandchildren, Lindsay Hylemon, Meagan Atkins, Taylor Hylemon, and Chelsea Hylemon; one great-great grandson, Colton Harrison Hylemon.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport, TN.
Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m., with Rev. Ronnie Gordon, officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 26, 2010, at Highland Cemetery, Rogersville, Hawkins Co TN, with Rev. Wayne Baker, officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank, 127 Dillon Court, Gray, TN 37615.
