Notes for William Patrick Garvin:
William Patrick Garvin served with the South Carolina 22nd, during the War Between the States, as a pvt. in Company I.Records from the National Archives show that he enlisted on March 29, 1862 at Charleston. It appears that in April of 1864 he went A.W.O.L. but the records fail to indicate that charged were brought against him.
Uncle Enoch knew him, because he had lived with them for a short period. He said that WP had told the children the story of "losing the entire Army."As his story went, they "had been left to hold a position on a hill (in either near Gettysburg or near Petersburg, Virginia) while the Army moved South. They stayed on the position until they ran totally our of food and ammunition. An effort was made to locate the Army, but when they were unable to, they voted to take the only other option they had. They went home."It fits, but was it true? The only thing in his favor is that he didn't hide.I feel certain that if he had actually run away, he would have at least made an effort to hide. This he did not do.
In the late 1800's, WP's sons, Levi and John Preston left for Alabama. His daughter Polly married William Gantt and followed her brothers. Our grandfather, James Brooks moved on to Georgia in the early 1900s.When he was left alone following the death of his wife Maranda, WP spent his time visiting his children. In the various National Census Records, he can be found in South Carolina, and Alabama.
On January 5, 1921, William Patrick died of pneumonia.According to his death certificate, he was then living at Giddy Swamp. There was absolutely no helpful information provided on the certificate, except for his date of birth. This was provided by L. O. BAUGHMAN (?)Who this man was we don't know. The fact that he at least knew the birth date, should mean that he was somehow connected to our family, perhaps as an in-law.When the 1930 Census is released in the year 2000, it will be interesting to track his place of residence. This could shed some light on the subject.
WB was laid to rest beside his wife Maranda, at Bethcar Cemetery in Aikin County, South Carolina. It is interesting to note here, that Maranda, who died in 1887, was buried with an incorrect grave marker. It carries the name Jenny. Was this a nick- name, or was an error made by the stone carver, and WP did not have the money to make the correction? This is something that we will never know.
Notes for Maranda Hutto:
Maranda passed away in 1887 and was buried at Bethcar Church. For some reason, the name on her grave marker was listed as Jenny. Was this a nickname or was it due to the error of the stone carver?

Notes for George Mcmichael:
George came to America from Scotland as a soldier in the army of General Braddock. His two brothers remained in New York and Pennsylvania after the Indian War, but George came South to South Carolina. When the British captured S.C. in 1780, George was commissioned as a Major of the Orangeburgh Dist. Regiment. He was not a violent Tory, because his daughters all married men who served in the American Revolution. His daughter Annah married out ancestor, Isaac Hutto, Jr.

Notes for Capt. Jacob Giessendanner:
Jacob Giessendanner was always referred to as Captain Giessendanner. There are records of him fighting in the Indian Wars.It is now know who he married, but obviously she died very early and he never remarried. The only reference to him as having one been married, is one mentioning his daughter's marriage to George McMichael of Orangeburg, SC.The daughters first name has never been mentioned in any of the older records of the church.
The Church records of Rev. Giesssendanner, (the relationship is also unknown,) give mention to his death. It apparently occurred after an eight day illness. He was 32 years, 6 months and 3 weeks old at the time of his death. At that time, his daughter would have only been a child.
Capt. Giessendanner was buried in the Old Pioneer Cemetery (referred to the the Giessendanner Graveyard)in Orangeburgh, located behind what is now the Orangeburg County Historical Society Building on Bull Street between North Broughton and Middleton Streets. His grave marker is missing, but there is a monument erected to the memory of those lying in un- marked graves, and his name is included in the list.It has been noted that the original markers were either stone or wooden, and that they became victim to grazing cows or were violated by individuals who removed bones to bury the bodies of others. We can only hope that Jacob is resting in peace.
