No photo but I have a great story about the Whippy Swamp Guards of the 1st South Carolina Mounted Militia. Jonathan Tuten Jr was in this unit. Grays S.C. was once known as Tuten's Crossroads. I have a Confederate Roster and there are a number of Tuten's listed...I have identified who most of them are but need info on Thomas William Tuten.
The 1st SC was indeed a militia. They didn't have much in the way of Confederate support. They banded together when Sherman invaded and was burning their homes. Many of these men had served elsewhere earlier in the war and returned home to rejoin this fight at the end. John C.C. Tuten was killed as were a number of others in the fight against Sherman.
Tell me who you are? Are you a descendant of Jonathan? Would love to hear from you.
