This John Tuthill was the simpleminded, illegitimate son of a housemaid who worked for John Skidmore in New Jersey. John Skidmore was my great grandfather, Fred Skidmore's, half brother.
My grandmother left me a notebook full of stories about our family including the story of John Tuthill coming to work on the Skidmore and Gregory family farm near New Rockford, Eddy Co., ND. In the spring of 1893, when John was 24, he left NJ for ND. He worked on the farm until they sold it in 1924 and moved to Santa Monica, CA. John stayed in ND and moved in with an Indian family who owned land about 15 miles from the farm. The farm was near the Fort Totten Indian Reservation.
He was very childlike in ways, but a hard worker and had a special gift with animals. He was also very religious. He promised to write to the family in CA, but never did.
If anyone thinks they might be related to this man and would like a copy of the story about him, which is 4 typewritten pages long, I'd be glad to send it to you.
I posted this message on the Tuttle Forum because my grandmother had spelled his name this way in her story. Then I found him listed with my grandfather and family in the 1920 Census as John S. Tuthill.
