I have been browsing through the India Genforum pages and came across your message about Henrietta Ada Tyers. My grandmother had a sister called Henrietta Ada Tyers.Henrietta's date of birth was 11 January 1883, and Christened on 9 January in Fatehgarh, Bengal.
Their father was Thomas Tyers who came out to India in about 1856 and was briefly involved with the Indian Mutiny (I am told); his regiment was due to leave for Ghana about 1860, but he decided to leave the British Army and joined the Indian Army.He worked with the Indian Army as an engineer and had something to do with the Ganges dam, building bridges and aquaducts, etc until he retired. He married Mary Anne Drane in 6 September 1867 in Jubbalpore. and I have traced 11 children:
Louise Ellen Tyers b 8 Oct 1868 Alfred W Tyers b 1870 Richard J Tyers b 1873 Frederick William Tyers b 1878 Alice Matilda Tyers b 20 June 1878 Margaret Anne Tyers b 5 December 1879 Henrietta Ada Tyers b 11 January 1883 Agnes Ruby Tyers b 5 November 1884 Charles Edgar Tyers b 5 December 1884 George Trevor Tyers b 18 August 1887 Samuel Edmund Tyers b29 October 1889
Margaret Anne Tyers is my grandmother; she married Frederick Ernest Maseyk in Jubbalpore 2 September 1903; they had 7 children:
Frederick Alfred Tyers Maseyk Norman Lesley Maseyk Grace Ellen Maseyk Ivy Florence Margaret Maseyk Ernest Thomas Maseyk Ida Faith Maseyk Norah Mary Madeline Maseyk who is my mother and today is 89 years old (30 May) All her brothers and sisters are now dead - Grace (Patsy) died last about 18 months ago.
They all lived in India until partitioning, and then went to Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Margaret Anne lived to the age of 99 years and 9 months old! Most of her family have lived to a ripe old age, too - two of the three deceased daughters were 91 and 94 when they died.
You mention the railways; I know that my grandfather, Frederick Ernest Maseyk worked on the railways all his life.
I have tried very hard to find out where Thomas Tyers came from in UK.My grandmother told my mother that he came from Derby.Last year I found army records of his, and it gave me when he left the UK for India, and lots about his Army records, but did not say where he came from!I have looked at the birth records for Derby and cannot find anything. The nearest I have got is a Thomas Tyers born in a place called Stapenhurst, which was then in Derbyshire, but is now in Staffordshire (new boundaries). But this man's date of birth is a little early for Thomas Tyers.I am wondering if it was that his family originally came from Derbyshire, rather than Thomas born there. There is also some talk that his name was Thomas Alfred or Alfred Thomas Tyers - who knows!?!
I would be interested to know if your Henrietta Ada Tyers is my grandmother's sister!I will be happy to give you any information about the Tyers family.
