Hello, a very old violin has just come into my possesion. I play and restore violins. Upon removing the front of the fiddle i noticed there was a very faint pencilled inscription. On closer inspection i read the following which might be of interest to you. It reads "James Uglow Feb 26 1847" upon further examination it also reads "born May 1770 Stratton Cornwall". I thought it was quite interesting anyway. The violin itself it obviously quite old and needs a lot of work to make it playable again, it is not a stradavarious by any stretch of the imagination and probably a one off. Although by no means worth a great deal of money it will be a nice to put it back into playing condition again. I wondered if this James Uglow was in any way related to your John Uglow.
