I am doing research on a Mary Ann UREY married to Michael R. Uber in Pennsylvania. I have come across some interesting information and observations regarding this name and her ancestry.
The parentage and identity of Mary Ann UREY is speculative. However, based on a great deal of research, I am absolutely convinced that this is correct:
Anna Maria OURY, b. 21 OCT 1783 in Westmoreland to Christopher and Catharina Rupp OURY is in fact our Mary Ann. She is variously known as Molly and Polly.
Both the Uber and Oury families settled in Westmoreland. Peter, father of Michael, and Christopher, father of Anna Maria were close friends, neighbors and filed a petition together for protection from Indians.
The UREI name is one of many variants: Urich, Urig, Oury, Owery, Urey, Urei, Ory, Uhry, Uhre, Œrrig, Uhrig, Ulrich, Ourry. These are most all related. While I do not doubt that there were Ory folks in France, the idea that Peter Oury, supposedly Christopher's father, is in fact Pierre Ory is dubious. Therefore, his date of birth and place are subject to discovery. These folks were Germans, emigrated with Germans, settled with Germans, went to a German speaking Church, intermarried with Germans. It is the same Hugenot myth I've encountered before among various and sundry of the Palatine emigrants who arrived in PA in the 1700s.
Curiously, these folks departed from Hamburg area which is not the Palatinate and is located on the Elbe rather than the Rhine which suggests they may not have started in the Rhine-Pfalz and ended up in Saxony/Hanover. However, it further suggests that they are likely not of French origin given the even greater distance between Hamburg and France.
Information from application for membership in National Society Daughters of The American Colonists:Name of Ancestor Christopher Ourry (Urick, Ourick, Urig ,Oury, Uhrig) Colony of PA. Services PALATINATE Settler Signed Oath of Allegiance Dec. 13, 1754. Christopher Ouury, (Uhrig, Oury, Urich) of Armstrong Co. Pa. born about 1736 died 1825 (Estate Record) Services: Came to America on the ship Neptune from Germany and signed the Oath of Allegiance Dec. 13, 1754. A Refugee from the Palatine. The ship was commanded by Capt. William Mallane from Hamburg, Last from Cowes, England.
The German name is, in fact, Uhrig and is a variation on the common surname Ulrich.
Who is Œrrig? "J. Caspar Œrrig" on the same 1754 Neptune ship list as "J. Christoph Urich". Passengers listed as from Hamburg, Hanover and Saxony. Dept. Hamburg. I suspect they must be related somehow but have been unable to find the connection.
