Jonathan,
I am sure that there is a connection and we must seek it out....however I am at a three week standstill with my teaching job and football broadcast schedule. I will return to geneolgy with much fuller attention after the Pennsylvania state playoff games Dec. 7thin Hershey.
Please keep in touch with me. My e'mail address is [email protected]
By the way, it seems that Riverside School District which includes the town of Taylor PA was making a run for the Single Astate football title. They just lost to Carbondale this weekend I believe. Maybe some Ulicny blood still flowing up in that direction. My father was an all state player and coach. Three of his sons includeing myself have coached.
My grandfather, Jan Ulicny did write to relatives in Taylor PA.....but that is as far as we know. All his children are now dead, but I had quizzed them all on who he wrote to, nobody was really sure. Some thought it was a half brother or sister. Some thought it was Sabols up in Taylor, PA.
He wrote in the 1930's and we just don't know to who.He was somewhat orphaned in the old country. I have a lot of data on him, but I am having trouble making the connections. I actually have a guy over there in Slovakia, Vlad, who is working on trying to connect it all. Perhaps the name of your home village will provide us a few more clues.
I have done an intensive census study of Taylor PA from 1910 and 1920 when our Slovaks would have immigrated. My grandfather was raised by his mother's parents, Jan and Anna Sabol. It seems that his dad had come to the USA and most likely got killed in the mines nears Shamokin PA,leaving the mother a young widow. She apparantly remarries a man name Elias and they start their own new family. My grandfather on his immigration record listed his name as Janos Elias Ulicny. Granfather came to Mahanoy City and then settled in to Shenandoah, PA just 4 miles away. Taylor is aobut 60 miles to our north, a suburb of Wilkes-Barre.
I searched Taylor census records for Sabol, Ulicny and I believe Elias as well.Strangley these are all sort of common Slovak names.Sabol means "a tailor"."Elias" drives his wagon like Elijah.
But, for the next few weeks I must hold off.But you've got me very excited to resume the search. We have a potential link that goes back 4 or 5more generations of Ulicny from my grandfather, but we just need to prove the link. Perhaps you and Taylor PA are the link.
