In an undated obit in my mother's possession is a write-up for Col. Stanley Milward Umstead. He was a native of Fleming Co., KY and had entered the service in 1917 graduating from the first Air Corps officer training course; once called the dean of all Army pilots flying 350 different types of experimental planes, from jennies to the first trainer for jets. He was test pilot for the first B19 world's largest military aircraft in the early 1940s. He retired in 1951 and lived on a farm near Dayton, OH. He was the son of Mrs. C. A. Umstead and survived by his wife, Mrs. Edna Umstead, three daughters: Mrs. David Bowe and Mrs. Richard Eaton of Dayton, OH, Mrs. Berry Brunside of CA, one son, Capt. Stanley M. Umstead, Jr., three brothers, G.E. Umstead, Sr., A.O. Umstead, and E.H. Umstead. Was buried in Dayton.Wish to connect with the Umsteads and Graves families of Fleming Co.
