Elizabeth UNCAPHER m Samuel STAHL
Looking for any info on Elizabeth UNCAPHER who married 1) Jacob FREE in Marion County, OH and 2) Samuel STAHL.She left her first 3 children with Jacob FREE and took her youngest when she eloped with Samuel STAHL.This child, Margaret Belle FREE, was actually the child of Samuel STAHL and went by that surname after they removed to Pettis County, MO.
According to the Genealogy of Martin Ungefehr and his descendants (1920), Samuel was the son of Isaac STAHL and Margaret UNCAPHER.He enlisted in Co. D, 135th Pennsylvania Volunteers, August 1862, and was with the Army of the Potomac in the Third Division of the First Army Base and discharged May 24, 1863.Based on this information, we sent for his pension records. This record supports and contradicts many of the facts we have obtained about Samuel:
1)It states that he was married first to Eliza A. MARTIN in 1867 in Ohio and that Eliza died January 8, 1904.He married second to Tamzon Perkins (maiden unknown) COCKBURN in Chicago, IL on February 15, 1905.The first discrepancy is the first wife which should state the name Elizabeth UNCAPHER or FREE; however the year and place match what we know thus far. Also, Elizabeth did not die in 1904, but on January 22, 1924 in Sedalia, MO.
2)It states that he lived in Colorado, Kansas and Illinois after his discharge. We have only been able to support that he lived in Pettis County, Missouri from 1879 through 1895.We have no other record that he was in Colorado except for his pension application dated 1897.We have not found support of his living in Kansas and Illinois.
3)It states that he only had one child:Edward Lee STAHL, born September 15, 1882.He had 6 children, the youngest of which was Edward Lee STAHL born in June 1883.
4)It states that his occupation was a carpenter which matches city directory and census records.
5)It states that Samuel died December 2, 1915 while living in Chicago, IL.Until we can prove that this pension record belongs to this Samuel STAHL, we believe that Samuel died in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri between 1894 and 1897.
6)It states Samuel's middle initial as "M".His daughter's records indicate that it was "Lee".
If you can help determine if the Samuel, civil war pensioner, is the same as the Samuel STAHL living in Pettis County from 1870-1895, please let me know.
