hi!just monkeying around with computer.beginning research on my husband's family and came across this GenForum. My husband's mother was an Uplinger, descended from Jacob Uplinger (born abt 1829 Va and married to Eliza Haney in Fountain County, IN. Jan. 4, 1855.Jacob & Eliza had one son, George A. Uplinger who married Mary C. Ensley here in Fountain Co. They had three children, John the oldest being great grandpa, his son, Byron being her father. All have lived in Fountain County, IN.
She has always told us that her great grandfather spoke German and came from Germany but as I have looked over census records so far I have found that Jacob says he was born in VA and Eliza in West VA.I know there were many families of German descent who lived around the Wallace IN. area spoke German.they even had a German school.I am just beginning my research and am only an amateur genealogist...any thoughts on the Fountain County Uplingers?Should we invest in the book Oblinger-Oplinger-Uplinger?sincerely, Valerie Hoagland
